Trailblazers fall to Thunderbirds Tuesday afternoon, 12-4

Dixie State fell 12-4 to Southern Utah Tuesday afternoon.  

How it happened: Dixie State started the game strong by putting runs on the board in the first inning. The Trailblazers loaded up the bases and Shea Clements drew a walk for an RBI. Kasey Crawford then had a sac fly to left field for a second RBI before the inning closed out. 

Southern Utah answered with a home run in the bottom of the first to make the score 2-1 after the first inning. The Thunderbirds had a big second inning as they put up nine runs from four hits and two errors to take a 10-2 lead over the Trailblazers. 

Dixie State tried to battle in the top of the third with Mikaela Thomson and Clements each coming up with hits to put runners on base and one in scoring position but Dixie wasn't able to finish and left the runners stranded on base. 

In the bottom of the fourth, Southern Utah was able to put up one run from one hit to take an 11-2 lead. In the top of the fifth, Dixie State loaded up the bases and Maile Maletta singled through the left side for two RBIs to put the score at 11-4. 

In the bottom of the fifth SUU came up with one run to take the eight point lead to end the game in five innings with a final score of 12-4. 

At the plate: Hannah Hughbanks led Dixie going 2-3 at the plate with one run and one double. The Blazers ended the game with seven hits from 22 at bats. DSU had four runs, four RBIs and drew three walks and had seven strikeouts. 

In the field: Dixie State had 12 putouts and one assists. Malory Eldredge had three putouts for the game high. DSU ended the game with four errors.  

In the circle: Carissa Burgess started in the circle for Dixie and pitched 1.1 innings. She gave up eight runs and three hits. She had one walk and one strikeout in the 13 batters faced. 

Kate Dolinski came in and closed out the game pitching 2.2 innings. She gave up five hits and four runs in the 17 batters faced. 

Notes to know: Dixie State is now 13-15 overall on the season and has a 1-2 record  in WAC action.

Up Next: Dixie State will host Tarleton State in a three game series with a double header on Friday, April 2 and a single game on April 3.
