Trailblazers drop two in double header with Lancers

Dixie State opened WAC action Friday afternoon dropping both games in a double header against California Baptist. First, DSU fell 6-0 in game one and 8-1 in game two. 

GAME 1
How it happened: California  Baptist was able to get two runs on the board in the first inning. CBU had bases loaded and Carissa Burgess came up with a strikeout to end the inning leaving three Lances left on base. 

CBU was able to get two runs in the top of the third inning to take a 4-0 lead over DSU. Dixie's offensive found some momentum in the bottom of the fifth inning. Oaklee Trapp started things off by drawing a walk. Kasey Crawford followed that up with a single to center field. Emma Sweet then singled to load up the bases. With bases loaded, the Trailblazers couldn't get a run across the plate and the inning closed out. 

In the seventh, the Lancers put up two more runs to come away with the 6-0 win over Dixie State. 

At the plate: Hannah Hughbanks led Dixie State going 2-3 at the plate. Crawford and Sweet each had hits to contribute to the Trailblazers four total hits of the game. DSU drew two walks and came away with six strikeouts. 

In the field: Dixie State had 21 putouts and nine assists. Thomson had eight putouts for the game high while Kirsten Quigley and Meagan Anders each had three assists. DSU ended the game with two errors. 

In the circle:  Carissa Burgess started in the circle for Dixie and pitched a complete seven innings. She gave up six runs and 15 hits. She had one walk and three strikeouts in the 39 batters faced. She now has a 9-8 record on the season. 

GAME TWO -
How it happened:
  CBU didn't waste any time getting on the board in the second game thanks to two runs in the first inning. The Lancers held Dixie State scoreless and continued to add to CBU's side of the scoreboard taking a 7-0 going into the bottom of the sixth inning. 

Dixie State found some offensive momentum in the bottom of the sixth. Anders started things off with a double to the right field fence. Hughbanks followed that with a single to right field. Malory Eldredge then singled to left field for an RBI. Mikaela Thomson also had a single before the inning closed out.  
The Lancers put up their final run in the seventh inning and the game closed out with Dixie State falling 8-1. 

At the plate: Dixie State ended game two with five hits, one run and one RBI. The Trailblazers had two doubles and four strikeouts. There were five different Blazers who went 1-3 at the plate. 

In the field: The Trailblazers ended the game with 21 putouts. Thomson had nine putouts for the game high. Brylee Rudd and Maile Maletta each had five assists. 

In the circle: Kate Dolinski started in the circle for Dixie State and pitched five innings. She gave up eight hits, five runs and one walk. She came away with one strikeout. 

Brianna Castellon closed the game for the Blazers and pitched two innings. She gave up six hits, three runs and one walk. 

Notes to know:  Dixie State is now 12-14 overall on the season and are now 0-2 in WAC action.

Up Next: DSU will take on California Baptist again tomorrow to close out the opening weekend of WAC action. Dixie will head to Southern Utah for a midweek non-conference matchup on March 30 before hosting Tarleton State.
