The Dixie State women's tennis team defeated Seattle University 5-2 on Sunday morning to gain their first Division I home and WAC win in program history.
"The team is excited to pick up it's first Division I home and Western Athletic Conference win," said head coach
Eric Pelton.
Dixie State (2-9, 1-1 WAC) started the day off by sweeping the doubles portion of the match.
Kyra Harames and
Sabrina Longson posted a 6-3 victory at No. 1 doubles, shortly after
Juliana Honczaruk and
Rachel Mellor won their match in No. 2 doubles 6-1, earning the doubles point. Seattle U was forced to forfeit No. 3 doubles due to a lack of players. Â
The Trailblazers kept the strong play up heading into singes action. Hildreth won the first point in singles by sweeping Seattle's (0-10, 0-2 WAC) No. 2 player. Harames then got in on the action by winning both of her sets 6-4 in No. 1 singles.
Emma Templeman then played to a victory in a back-and-forth match in No. 4 singles. The junior lost her first set 5-7 but came back with a 7-5 victory of her own, she then played to a 10-7 victory in the third set. This clinched the victory and ended a tremendous day of play from the Trailblazers.
"The girls definitely came out strong today, winning the doubles and that energy and excitement carried into singles play," added coach Pelton. "They now have a taste of what they are really capable of and they are excited to take that into their matches next week, especially when we head back to conference play in Texas."
Dixie State is currently in a three-way tie for third place in the WAC standings after this morning's win.
The Trailblazers will take a brief break from WAC play, they will travel to Las Vegas, Nevada on March 23 to take on UNLV. They will then come home on Saturday, March 27 for a double header against former RMAC opponent, Colorado Mesa.
