Dixie State split another double header with Weber State Saturday afternoon. First Dixie State fell 11-6 before defeating the Wildcats 9-1 in five innings.
GAME 1
How it happened: To start things off Weber State jumped to a 5-0 lead in the second inning. In the bottom of the third, Dixie State's offensive momentum took hold. Hannah Hughbanks started things off with a double to right field. Malory Eldredge and Shea Clements each came up with singles to load the bases up. Kasey Crawford then singled for an RBI to put the Wildcats on the board.
With bases loaded and one out, Mikaela Thomson sent a ball deep into left field for a grand slam to tie the game at 5-5 after three innings.
Weber State put up four runs in the top of the fifth to take a 9-5 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, Meagan Anders homered to right field for a solo shot. As the sixth inning ended DSU trailed 9-6.
Weber State put up two runs in the top of the seventh and Dixie State couldn't answer in the bottom and the Wildcats walked away with an 11-6 win.
At the plate: Dixie State was led by Anders who went 3-4 at the plate with one run and one homerun. Kasey Crawford went 2-3 at the plate with one run, one run and one RBI. Mikaela Thomson went 2-3 at the plate with four RBIs from her home run.
In total, Dixie State had 13 hits from 33 at bats with six runs and six strikeouts.
In the field: Dixie State had 21 putouts and 11 assists. Thomson had eight putouts for the game high while Clements had five.
In the circle: Brianna Castellon started in the circle for Dixie State and pitched 4.1 innings. She gave up seven hits, six runs and just one walk. She also had three strikeouts on the day in the 22 batters faced.
Kate Dolinski came in and pitched 2.2 innings for DSU and gave up seven hits, five runs and one walk. She also had three strikeouts in her 17 faced batters.
GAME TWO -
How it happened: Dixie State came out guns blazing in the second game. In the bottom of the first, Hughbanks started things off with a single to shortstop. The Blazers then loaded up the bases and Thomson singled to centerfield for an RBI. Crawford and
Emma Sweet each had singles for RBIs to give DSU a 4-0 lead.
Momentum continued in the first inning as Kirsten Quigley reached on a fielder's choice for two RBIs. As the first inning came to a close, Dixie State had a 6-0 lead.
In the top of the third, Weber State scored one run off of two hits to put the Wildcats on the board.
Dixie State answered in the bottom of the fourth inning, Eldredge started things off with a double to center field. Thomson then singled for an RBI. Crawford had a sac fly for an RBI. At the end of four complete innings Dixie State had an 8-1 lead over Weber State.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Trailblazers needed one run to end the game early and that's exactly what they did. Anders started things off by drawing a walk and then advancing to scoring position.
Clements then singled to center field for an RBI to give Dixie State the 9-1 victory in five innings.
At the plate: Dixie State ended game two with nine hits, nine runs and nine RBIs. The Trailblazers had one double, drew four walks and had just one strikeout. Thomson went 3-3 at the plate, with two RBIs and one run.
In the field: The Trailblazers ended the game with 15 putouts. Thomson had 10 putouts for the game high.
In the circle: Carissa Burgess started in the circle and pitched a complete five innings. She gave up three hits, one run and no walks.
Notes to know: Dixie State is now 12-12 overall on the season. The Trailblazers put together have won 11 of the last 14 games.
