Trailblazers split double header with Weber State

Dixie State came away with a 1-1 split with Weber State Saturday afternoon. First, the Trailblazers fell 14-4 to the Wildcats. In the second game, Dixie came away with a 9-7 victory. 

GAME 1
How it happened: Weber State had a big jump on Dixie State with a 9-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth. 

In the bottom of the fifth, Oaklee Trapp singled through the left side to start things off. Kirsten Quigley then followed it up with a single to left field. With two runners on base, Hannah Hughbanks came up with a home run deep into left field for a three run shot to put the Trailblazers on the board. 

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Mikaela Thomson homered to left center for a solo home run. 

Weber State had a big seventh inning and Dixie State couldn't answer as WSU walked away with a 14-4 win. 

At the plate: Dixie State was led by Malory Eldredge who went 2-2 at the plate. Hughbanks went 1-3 with three RBIs and one run. 

In total, Dixie State had six hits from 27 at bats with four runs and four six strikeouts.  

In the field: Dixie State had 21 putouts and five assists. Shea Clements had six putouts while Quigley and Thomson each had four putouts.  

In the circle:  Carissa Burgess started in the circle and pitched 4.2 innings. She gave up eight hits, six runs and four walks in the 26 batters faced. She did have four strikeouts. 

Brianna Castellon pitched 1.1 innings and gave up five hits, seven runs and two walks. 

Kate Dolinski stepped in to close the game and pitched one inning and gave up one hit and one run and came away with two strikeouts. 

GAME TWO -
How it happened: 
The second game went much better for Dixie State. In the bottom of the second inning, Thomson started things off with a single to left field. Dixie State then strong together six more hits. Clements doubled to left field for an RBI.  Laura Lockard singled to right for an RBI. Quigley singled for two RBIs. Malory Eldredge singled to right field for two RBIs and as the second inning closed out DSU had a 6-1 lead. 

Weber State answered in the top of the fourth and put up five runs to tie the game and put up a lead run in the top of the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth, Clements hit one off the top of the left field fence for a solo home run and to tie the game. 

With two runners on, Quigley singled to center field and the ball took a gnarly hop over the center fielder allowing a run to score. Hughbanks later singled for an RBI and the 9-7 lead. 

Dixie State locked down on defense allowing no hits in the top of the sixth and was able to leave two Wildcat base runners stranded in the top of the seventh to close out the win. 

At the plate: Dixie State ended game two with 12 hits from 28 at bats. The Blazers had nine runs, nine RBIs and drew four walks. Hughbanks went 2-3 with one RBI and one double in the game. Clements went 2-4 at the plate with two RBIs, two runs, one double and one home run. 

Quigley went 2-3 at the plate with three RBIs and one run. 

In the field: The Trailblazers ended the game with 21 putouts and eight assists. Thomson had 12 putouts and Meagan Anders had four assists. 

In the circle: Kate Dolinski started in the circle and pitched 3.1 innings. She gave up five runs, seven hits and two walks. She did come away with one strikeout in the 20 batters faced. 

Carissa Burgess came in and closed out the game and pitched 3.2 innings. She gave up four hits, two runs and two walks. She had two strikeouts in the 18 batters faced. 

Notes to know:  Dixie State is now 11-11 overall on the season. The Trailblazers put together DSU has won 10 of the last 12 games. 

Up Next: Dixie State will take on Weber State in another double header tomorrow. DSU will have one more game against Southern Utah on March 23 before starting WAC action against California Baptist at home March 26-27.
