Trailblazers Secure Winning Season With Sweep Over Cougars

Dixie State's (9-8/8-8 WAC) first season in Division 1 will end with a winning overall record after the Trailblazers won in its final match of the season against Chicago State. DSU's defense held the Cougars to a .163 hitting percentage while its offense fired a hitting percentage of .291.
 
Dixie State found itself in a 10-7 hole early in the first set but were able to hang around and stay close throughout the set.  The Trailblazers didn't take their first lead until 25-24 and would win the set one point later, 26-24.
 
It was back and forth in the second set as neither team was able to gain a lead of more than three.  The score was tied at 17, 19, 20, 21, 22, 24, 25 and 26 before the Trailblazers were able to slam the door and win the set 28-26.
 
Dixie State controlled the majority of the third set.  After Chicago State tied the set at seven, the Trailblazers went on a 13-2 run to take a commanding lead.  Dixie State wouldn't look back and would close out the Cougars 25-16 and in the process, finish it's inaugural season in Division 1 with a winning season.
 
Whittnee Nihipali paced the Trailblazers offensively as she recorded a career-high 19 kills on a .386 hitting percentage.  Nihipali also had 12 digs to earn her third double-double of the season.  Sydney Johnson in her final match in a Trailblazer uniform had nine kills.  Taela Laufiso handed out 12 assists while Jordyn Nelson notched a double-double with 25 assists and 10 digs.  Mykenna Nelson had 17 digs while Rebekah Farris had 12 digs to help the Trailblazers in the win.  
 
With the win, The Trailblazers finish the season with a 9-8 overall record and and 8-8 mark in conference play notching it's third consecutive winning season.  After finishing up its COVID-shortened season, Dixie State will return to play in the fall.
