Lane Pritchard's one-out, bases-loaded single in the bottom of the ninth propelled Dixie State to its first NCAA Division I home victory, a 5-4 walk-off win over BYU, on Tuesday night at Bruce Hurst Field.
Trailing 1-0 and being held hitless through the game's first three innings, the Trailblazer offense came to life to the tune of four runs and five hits to bolt to a 4-1 lead after four complete.
Kaden Hollow and
Jake Engel both singled ahead of
Tyler Hollow, who singled home his younger brother and put DSU (2-10) on the board.
Then with two outs,
Shane Taylor drove an opposite field double over the head of Cougar leftfielder Cooper Vest to chase home Engel and
Tyler Hollow. Pritchard followed that up with a sharp single to center to bring Taylor around to score to cap the rally.
Dixie State maintained its lead until the seventh, that's when the Cougar outfielder Cole Gambill cashed in a pair of lead-off walks with a three-run home run over the right field wall to draw BYU (3-11) even at 4-4.
In the Trailblazer ninth,
Tanner Harper was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, then
Tyler Hollow singled up the middle and DSU was in business with two on and no one out.
Ben Petty-Hull then beat out a relay throw on a Cougar double play chance and Taylor was intentionally walked to load the bases.
Pritchard then stepped up and laced a 2-2 pitch right at a drawn in Cougar shortstop Andrew Pintar, who dove to make the grab, but could not get off a throw as pinch runner
Jack Walker crossed home plate carrying the winning run to end the game.
Dixie State won despite being outhit 10-7, though the Blazers were helped out by the fact that BYU stranded 13 Cougars on the base paths.
Tyler Hollow and Pritchard finished with two hits apiece to lead the Trailblazers offensively.
DSU utilized nine different pitchers, which combined to strike out 10 Cougar hitters, including a season-high tying five punchouts from junior southpaw
Jack Gonzales in his two innings of one-hit relief. Senior closer
Brayden Bonner (W, 1-0) tossed a scoreless ninth to earn the win.
Dixie State will open the home portion of its WAC debut slate with a four-game series vs. UT Rio Grande Valley this Friday-through-Sunday at Bruce Hurst Field.
