Dixie State opened the home portion of its 2021 Spring FCS debut season on the wrong end of a 37-15 decision against Tarleton State on Saturday night at Greater Zion Stadium. The Trailblazers, who defeated the Texans by a 26-14 count in their FCS debut back on Feb. 27, fell to 1-2 on the season.
The Texans (3-2) came into the game looking to exact a little revenge for that loss last month, and they got going in a hurry as they scored touchdowns on two of their first three possessions to open up a 14-0 lead after one quarter.
After going three-and-out on its first possession, Tarleton needed only five plays to go 70 yards, which culminated with a Steven Duncan to Dray Roberson 21-yard strike for the game's first score. Then after a DSU three-and-out, Duncan capped a five-play, 63-yard drive with a 26-yard TD pass to Tariq Bitson. TSU would add an Adrian Guzman 45-yard field goal in the second quarter on its way to a 17-0 halftime advantage.
Dixie State, which was held scoreless in a half for the first time this season and to just 33 yards passing through the first two quarters, tried to catch Tarleton off guard with a short lobbed kick to open the second half. However Tarleton snuffed it out and was set up with great field position at the DSU 48-yard line.
The Texans then scored their third touchdown of the game four plays later when Duncan found Bitson from 8-yards out to extend to a 24-0 cushion.
DSU would put together its first sustained drive of the game on the Blazers' next possession, a 14-play, 62-yard drive that ended with a
James Baird 45-yard field goal to get DSU on the scoreboard.
Tarleton would add a third quarter field goal and another Duncan touchdown pass, his fourth of the game, early in the fourth to push its lead to 34-3.
Dixie State would find the end zone twice in the fourth quarter, the first time came with 4:18 remaining when freshman quarterback
Kobe Tracy hooked up with fellow freshman
David Fisher for a 49-yard catch-and-run for the duo's first collegiate touchdown. Tracy and Fisher also connected for a 14-yard touchdown on the game's final play.
After racking up 445 yards of total offense in the first meeting at Tarleton, which included 350 yards in the air, Dixie State was held to a season-low 364 yards on Saturday night, with 207 of those yards coming after halftime. DSU was limited to 202 yards passing, though the Blazers did combine for a season-high 162 yards rushing.
Tracy, who came in the game in late in the third quarter, went 6-of-17 for 123 yards to go with his two touchdowns in his collegiate debut. Junior
Kody Wilstead started the game and was 11-of-29 passing for 79 yards. Freshman running back
Quali Conley just missed his first collegiate 100-yard game as he finished with a career-high 97 net yards on 22 carries.
Tarleton State tallied 514 yards of total offense, with 347 of those yards coming off the arm of Duncan, who completed 22 of his 33 pass attempts.
Dixie State will wrap up the road portion of its 2021 spring schedule at current No. 9 Kennesaw State next Saturday at 1 p.m. (ET), in Kennesaw, Ga.
