Dixie State secured a 2-1 win against Incarnate Word on Saturday afternoon behind two goals from junior midfielder,
Idris Alabi.
"We had a good week of training after our [San Jose State University]Â game and it showed today", said head coach
Jonny Broadhead. "We still have so much to improve on. Incarnate Word is a very good team and dealt with what I would assume some difficult weather last week which probably made their game preparation challenging."
The Trailblazers (1-2, 1-2 WAC) started off similar to their last match with an early goal from Alabi. The junior scored at the 19:44 mark from the right side of the box to give DSU a 1-0 lead. However, Incarnate Word (1-1, 1-1 WAC) would answer with less than five minutes left in the first half with a Wilmar Aguilar goal.
The Trailblazers continued to fight in the second half of play, outshooting the Cardinals 5-1, and 3-0 on goal. The match remained tied until the 65' when sophomore forward
John Joseph sent a pass in front of the Cardinals goal for an Alabi goal, his second of the match and third on the year.
Dixie State held out for the rest of the match to secure a 2-1 victory. The Trailblazers outshot Incarnate Word 9-6, including a 5-3 edge on frame.
Idris Alabi led the Trailblazers with three shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper
Jakob Moore was credited with two saves in the win.
"Credit to our guys who played extremely tough to get the men's soccer program's first Division I win", said coach Broadhead. "It is a great feeling but we want to do the work this next week for more."Â
This marks the Trailblazers first Division I win in program history and their first win as a member of the Western Athletic Conference.
DSU will be back in action at home on Saturday, March 2 against WAC preseason favorite, Seattle University.
