Game Recap: Softball |

Dixie State falls 12-6 to Southern Utah

Dixie State continued the 2021 season with the first home game of the season against Southern Utah. Dixie State fell 12-6 to SUU.

What head coach Randy Simkins said: "Up to this point in the year we have been able to play, for the most part, fairly mistake free softball. But, today the mistakes that we made came back to hurt us a little bit. We allowed SUU to extend innings that we should've been out of, and those innings put us in a tough spot to come back from.  I was pleased with the way we swung the bat today.  Much higher percentage of quality at-bats today gave us a chance to put runs on the board early, we just needed to continue to do that throughout the rest of the game."

How it happened: Southern Utah started the game off with a double for an RBI. With a runner in scoring position, SUU singled for another run before Dixie State could get out of the inning defensively.

In the bottom of the first, Hannah Hughbanks started things off with a double to center field. Shea Clements followed that up with a double to left field scoring Hughbanks. Later, Clements was able to steal home to tie the game up at 2-2 after the first inning of play.

SUU had a big second inning coming up with six runs thanks in large part to a grandslam.

In the bottom of the second inning, DSU had a runner on first, when Hughbanks doubled to left center. With two runners in scoring position, Meagan Anders came up to bat and cranked one over the right field fence for a three run shot. Heading into the third inning, DSU trailed 8-6.

Southern Utah went on to score four more runs and DSU couldn't catch up as the game concluded with a final score of 12-6.

At the plate: Dixie State scored six runs from 10 hits with five RBIs. DSU drew two walks, both of which were hit by pitches and had five strikeouts.  Hughbanks led WSU with two hits and two runs from three at bats. She also drew one walk. Clements and Mikaela Thomson both came away with two hits on the day.

Southern Utah  ended the game with 12  runs from 12 hits with 11 RBIs. SUU drew just two walks and had three strikeouts.

In the field: Dixie State had 21 putouts and 10 assists. Thomson closed out six for the game high. While Kirsten Quigly had six assists.

In the circle:  Carissa Burgess started in the circle for DSU and pitched 1.1 innings giving up 6 hits, seven runs and one walk. She came away with two strikeouts in the 12 batters faced.

Ashtyn Bauerle came into the circle and pitched 4.2 innings. She gave up six hits, five runs and one walk. She came away with one strikeout in the 24 batters faced.
