Dixie State picks up first Division I victory over Southern Utah

The Trailblazers took down Southern Utah Saturday afternoon 5-4 for Dixie State's first NCAA Division I win.

What head coach Randy Simkins said: "I'm very proud of the way our girls fought back today and closed the game out.  All three pitchers did a great job keeping us in the game and pitching us out of some tight spots. We also had some really strong defensive plays to save runs from scoring. We also had better performances at the plate today."

How it happened:  Southern Utah got on the board first thanks to a two run shot over center field in the top of the first inning. In the top of the third inning, SUU homered over the right center fence giving them a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third, Dixie State got two runners on base in scoring position. Mallory Eldredge singled to left center scoring two runners cutting the score deficit. As the third inning came to a close DSU trailed 3-2 to Southern Utah.

The fourth inning went scoreless for both teams but Dixie State tied the game up 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a Southern Utah throwing error.

Southern Utah was able to get one runner across the plate in the top of the sixth. SUU's narrow 4-3 lead didn't last long as the Trailblazers answered back in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Kirsten Quigley drew a walk and then quickly stole second base. With Quigley in scoring position, Hannah Hughbanks singled up the middle and Quigley took off for home. With the run across the plate safely, Hughbanks' RBI tied the game at 4-4.

With a runner on second and still two outs, Meagan Anders singled through the left side for what ended up being the game winning RBI. As the two teams headed into the final inning of play, Dixie State had a 5-4 lead.

The Thunderbirds weren't going down easily as they started the top of the seventh with a double. That was all they allowed as the Trailblazers locked down on defense as DSU execute three consecutive defensive plays against the SUU batters who fouled out to right field, grounded out for a 5-3 putout, and popped up to the shortstop. With that final out, Dixie State earned its first victory as a Division I team.
