Dixie State (2-2/1-2 WAC) made its D-1, WAC home-opener a memorable one as it took down the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in a three-set sweep Monday night inside Burns Arena.
 
The Trailblazers got things going early and used a 6-0 run early in the set to jump out to a 9-4 lead.  UTRGV hung around, however, and kept the set relatively even from there before Dixie slammed the door scoring on six of the final nine rallies to take the opening set 25-18.
 
It was back and forth to begin set two as the Vaqueros held a slim 11-10 lead halfway through the frame.  The Trailblazers proceeded to go on a 7-0 spurt which turned things around.  UTRGV wouldn't go away, however, and it fought back to trail 20-19.  Dixie State won five of the next six points to earn a 25-20 victory and take a commanding two-set lead.  The Trailblazers were aided by a blistering .400 hitting percentage. 
 
DSU's defense was the story in set three as it forced the Vaqueros into a game-high eight errors and a meager .028 hitting percentage.  Most of that damage took place in the second half of the set after the Trailblazers found themselves in a 10-9 deficit.  Dixie State went on a 16-8 extended run to claim the third set 25-18 and secure its first Western Athletic Conference win in sweeping fashion.
 
Megan Treanor recorded her third double-double of the season as she paced the Trailblazers with a team-high 16 kills and also added 13 assists.  Jordyn Nelson had a monster night as well as she passed out 27 assists and nabbed 7 digs.  Mykenna Nelson led the team with 16 digs to help in the victory.
 
Dixie State now looks to duplicate Monday night's success as it will face off with UTRGV in a Tuesday matinee.  The match is set to begin at 12 noon inside Burns Arena. Live stats and video streaming information can be found on www.dixiestateathletics.com.
