Dixie State Falls to Southern Utah 95-58 Tuesday

Dixie State women's basketball finished out pre-season action Tuesday afternoon with a 95-58 loss to rival Southern Utah. 

What Head Coach JD Gustin Said: "I am really proud of our first half effort. Our energy and enthusiasm,our ability to stick to the game plan is something to build on. We're excited to get to work and start WAC play. " 

How it Happened: The game started out on a slow offensive pace as SUU had just a narrow 8-5 lead at the first quarter media timeout. After that the T-Birds went on a 8-2 run over Dixie State. As the first quarter ended, DSU trailed 20-14. 

The Trailblazers found some fire in the second quarter  which turned into a game of Leap Frog. DSU started off on an 8-3 run bringing the score to 23-22. SUU answered with a 9-0 run to push the T-Bird lead to 10. The Trailblazers then found a hot streak going on a 9-3 run to bring the score back within four points. As the first half ended, Dixie State trailed 43-39. 

Southern Utah captured all the momentum in the third quarter out scoring Dixie State 26-14. 

The T-Brids maintained the momentum holding DSU to just four points in the first 6 minutes of the fourth quarter. Dixie State battled at the end but ultimately fell 95-58 to Southern Utah. 

Leaders: Dixie State had two players score in double figures and was led by Emily Isaacson who had 18 points. Breaunna Gillen stayed on par with her average dropping 16 points. Averi Papa led DSU with seven rebounds. 

Comparison: Dixie State ended the game shooting 33 percent from the field, 16 percent from the three and 64 percent from the free throw line. The Trailblazers totaled 33 rebounds, eight assists, six steals and 16 turnovers. 

The Trailblazers had 16 points off the bench and 32 points in the paint.   

Southern Utah shot 54 percent from the field, 33 percent from the three and 66 percent from the free throw line. The Thunderbirds ended the game with 43 rebounds, 16 assists, 10 turnovers and eight steals. 

The T-Birds had 50 points in the paint and 19 off the bench.  

Notes to Know: DSU is now 4-7 overall on the season. 

Up next: Dixie State will hit the road to start WAC action after the break taking on Tarleton State (Dec. 30) and Abilene Christian (Jan.1).
