Trailblazers Pick Up Historic Win in WAC Opener

Dixie State women's basketball started Western Athletic Conference Action by picking up the school's first win over a Division I program. The Trailblazers downed Tarleton State 57-49 Thursday evening. 

Key Plays:
1Q 9:06 -  Emily Isaacson slips the defender on a screen as Breaunna Gillen lobs the pass for an open made layup for Dixie's first points of the game. 
1Q 7:27 -Macie Warren sinks her first three pointer of the game. 
1Q 2:32 - Talie Sireni draws an And One on a layup for a successful three point play. 

2Q 8:53 - Maggie McCord makes moves in the paint to give Dixie State the lead for the first time in the game. 
2Q 1:56 - Papa sinks a free throw to give DSU the biggest lead to that point. 

3Q 8:55 - Talia Sireni sinks a three pointer to start the second half off on a high note. 
3Q 2:55 - Macie Warren dribbles into the key and slips it to a cutting Isaacson for an easy layup to recapture the lead for DSU with a 33-31 lead. 
3Q 00:26 - Gillen makes a driving layup to maintain the Blazers lead 37-33 going into the fourth quarter. 

4Q 9:15 - Averi Papa pulls down her own offensive board, puts it back up for some second chance points. 
4Q 6:19 - Papa sinks a pair of free throws to break a three minute Trailblazer scoring drought and bringing the score back within three. 
4Q 5:05 - Isaacson drains the first of three from beyond the arc that sparked a 13-0 run for DSU. 
4Q 00:31 - Isaacson drains a pair of free throws to take a 10 point lead. 

Turning Points: 
In the second quarter, the Trailblazers held the Texans to a four minute scoring drought. During that drought Dixie State went on a 7-0 run. DSU outscored TSU 12-6 in the second quarter. 

In the fourth quarter, Tarleton State went on a 9-0 run over a two minute time frame to take a 42-39 lead over Dixie State with seven minutes remaining in the half. With 5:05 on the clock, the Trailblazers went on a 13-0 run.

Leaders: Dixie State was led by Isaacson who had a new career high of 25 points. She went 7-11 from the field, 3-7 from beyond the arc and 8-8 from the free throw line. Isaacson also led DSU on the boards pulling down nine on the night. 

Macie Warren also scored in double figures with 12 on the night with four made from the three. 

Comparison: Dixie State ended the game shooting 39 percent from the field, 47 percent from the three and 86 percent from the free throw line. The Trailblazers totaled 39 rebounds, 10 assists, one steal and 16 turnovers. 

Tarleton State shot 36 percent from the field, six percent from the three and 66 percent from the free throw line. The Texans ended the game with 28 rebounds, nine assists, 10 turnovers and eight steals. 

Notes to Know: DSU is now 5-7 overall on the season and 1-0 in WAC play. This was Dixie State's first win in school history over a Division I team. The Trailblazers snapped the Texans three game winning streak. 

Up next: Dixie State will stay on the road to take on Abilene Christian (Jan.1) before returning home to take on in-state rival Utah Valley (Jan. 8).
