Head Coach JD Gustin picked up his 200th career win as a collegiate head coach as the Dixie State women's basketball team picked up a 79-55 victory over Westcliff Tuesday afternoon in front of hundreds of local elementary school kids.
What Head Coach JD Gustin Said: "We missed a lot of wide open three pointers today. Our shots weren't falling and that's when we have to get touches in the paint to work. We did a much better job of getting paint touches to succeed today to make up for those outside shot misses. Games like today are great opportunities for us to work on little things and fine tune them as we go into WAC play after the break. "
How it Happened: The Trailblazers started out on a 6-0 run thanks to back-to-back three pointers by
Emily Isaacson and
Macie Warren. Later in the first quarter, DSU went on a 10-3 run holding the Warriors to a two minute scoring drought. As the initial quarter of action ended Dixie State had a 19-9 lead over Westcliff.
In the second quarter, DSU went on a 13-2 run before leading 39-21 at the half.
Dixie State started the second half with an 11-3 run. Westcliff made a good run in third with the Trailblazers only outsourcing them 21-18. Heading into the final quarter of action, DSU had a 60-39 lead.
The damage had been done as the Trailblazers closed out the game with a 79-55 win.
Leaders: Dixie State had four players score in double figures and was led by
Macie Warren who had 16 points.
Breaunna Gillen and
Maggie McCord each put up 14 points to help out the offensive efforts.
Emily Isaacson recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Her 12 boards were the game high. Brooke Vance also recorded double digit rebounds with 10 pm the game.
Gilledn had six assists to contribute.
Comparison: Dixie State ended the night shooting 45 percent from the field, 31 percent from the three and 80 percent from the free throw line. The Trailblazers totaled 50 rebounds, 15 assists, six steals and nine turnovers.
The Trailblazers had 32 points off the bench and 38 points in the paint.
Westcliff shot 33 percent from the field, 40 percent from the three and 54 percent from the free throw line. The Warriors ended the game with 36 rebounds, 12 assists, nine turnovers and six steals.
The Warriors had 20 points in the paint and 18 off the bench.
Notes to Know: DSU is now 4-5 overall on the season. Today's victory marked head coach JD Gustin's 200th victory as a collegiate head coach. Today's nine turnovers were the lowest for the Trailblazers so far this season.
