Volleyball falls at New Mexico State

Jordyn Nelson moves to No. 2 in Career Assists

The Dixie State volleyball team opened its final road trip of the 2021 season on a sour note on Thursday, falling in straight sets (19-25, 14-25, 26-28) to New Mexico State inside the Pan American Center in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

The Trailblazers (5-14, 4-7 WAC) posted their third-highest hitting percentage of the season, and the highest in any loss, finishing with a mark of .217 to go with 41 kills. Bridgett Talia finished one kill shy of matching a career-high, leading DSU with 13 kills. Jordyn Nelson recorded a team-high 15 assists to move to No. 2 All-Time on the Trailblazers' career assists list. Nelson has now accumulated 2,332 career assists.

Dixie State used a 10-3 run midway through the first set to turn an 11-6 deficit into a 16-14 advantage. But the Aggies countered with a run of their own to take control of the set with a 7-1 stretch to take a 21-17 lead. After DSU scored on an NMSU service error, the Aggies scored four of the final five points to clinch the 25-18 set victory.

New Mexico State raced to a 7-1 lead in set two, forcing a DSU timeout along the way. The Trailblazers responded with a 6-3 spurt to trim the lead to 10-7, but NMSU answered with a 9-1 run to push the lead back to 19-8. The teams traded points from there, until the Aggies claimed a 25-14 triumph to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Aggies took an early lead in set three and maintained the advantage throughout most of the frame. DSU pulled to within two points at 11-9 midway through the set, but from there, NMSU would lead by no less than three points until it built its largest lead of the frame at 22-16. Facing a three-set sweep, the Trailblazers refused to go down easy and responded with an 8-2 to run to pull even at 24-24. The teams went back-and-forth over the next four points, until the Aggies eventually notched consecutive points to snag a 28-26 set victory and the 3-0 match win.

The Trailblazers will close out the road portion of its schedule with a Saturday afternoon match at Grand Canyon in Phoenix, Arizona. Opening serve is set for 3 p.m. Arizona Time (4 p.m. MT).
