Trailblazers Run Over Fort Lewis Saturday Night, 62-21

Drew Kannely-Robles rushed for 158 yards and a Dixie State NCAA-era record four touchdowns as the Trailblazers ran past Fort Lewis, 62-21, on Saturday night inside Greater Zion Stadium. The victory, DSU's first of the season, moved the Blazers to 1-9 overall, while the Skyhawks closed their 2021 campaign at 0-11.

Dixie State needed just over two minutes to set the tone for the night, striking for two touchdowns en route to an early 14-0 lead. Kannely-Robles got his record-breaking night off on a solid note, as he accounted for all 68 yards of the Blazers' opening drive on runs of 21 and 31 yards, before weaving his way around the right side of the line and into the end zone from 16-yards out for his first TD of the game.

Then after an FLC three-and-out and a shanked punt, the senior running back picked up 18 more yards on DSU's opening play of its second possession. Then on the very next snap, Kobe Tracy scrambled right and lobbed a pass over the top 22 yards to a sprawling Keith Davis in the end zone as DSU was up two scores after 2:15 had clicked off the game clock.

The Skyhawks clapped right back on their ensuing possession when on 3rd and 8 near midfield, FLC quarterback Armon Hickson hit Alex Motler in stride over the middle, and Motler broke free for a 51-yard pitch and catch to cut the deficit in half at 14-7.

DSU nursed its one score lead into the second quarter, a quarter that saw the Trailblazers erupt for five touchdowns over the final 11:31 of the stanza to take a commanding 49-14 lead into the halftime break.

Tracy sandwiched a pair of touchdown tosses around Kannely-Robles' second score of the game. The freshman signal caller cashed in an eight-play, 80-yard drive when he found Rickie Johnson on a 12-yard slant.

After a Kannely-Robles 3-yard dive capped DSU's second possession of the frame, the Dixie State defense picked up the first of its two second quarter turnovers when Jordan Scott stepped in front of a Hickson pass at the DSU 28 and returned it to the FLC 49.

Then on the very next play, Tracy went deep and found David Fisher at the 2-yard line, where the freshman receiver outfought a Skyhawk defender to make the catch and dove forward over the goal line to make it a 28-7 game.

Following another FLC three-and-out, Dixie State marched 50 yards in six plays, which culminated with a 1-yard Quali Conley touchdown rush.

DSU's defense would set up the Blazers' final touchdown of the quarter when Tyrell Grayson recorded his second interception in as many games when he picked off Hickson at midfield.

Tracy would go on to complete three-straight passes for a combined 49 yards to the FLC 1, where Kannely-Robles finished the drive with touchdown number three. In all, the Trailblazers found the end zone on all five of their second quarter possessions.

Dixie State would collect its third defensive turnover of the night on FLC's opening drive of the second half. After a Devyn Perkins sack of Hickson forced a second-and-long situation, the Skyhawk QB was intercepted by Livingston Paogofie at the FLC 28, and the big defensive lineman rambled 22 yards to 6-yard line.

Kannely-Robles then cashed in the miscue two plays later with his record-setting TD rush, which came from 6-yards out on what turned out to be his final carry of the night.

DSU would tack on a pair of Connor Brooksby field goals, including a school-record tying 50-yarder with 10:24 remaining in the game. That made kick also led to another school record as the Blazers' point total reached 62, which broke the previous record of 60 set last March in DSU's 2021 spring finale win over, coincidentally, Fort Lewis (W, 60-0; 3/27/21).

Dixie State finished with season highs of 257 yards on the ground and five total rushing touchdowns. Meanwhile, Tracy went 18-of-23 passing for 281 yards and three TDs, as Dixie State racked up a season-high 538 yards of total offense. Tracy completed passes to eight different receivers, with Fisher catching three balls for a career-high 96 yards to go with his second quarter touchdown.

For Kannely-Robles, his 158 yards on 14 carries marked the second time this season, and in his collegiate career at DSU, that the senior had rushed for over 100 yards. Meanwhile his 11.3 yards per attempt on the night finished as the third-highest individual single game average in the program's four-year era.

Dixie State will close out the 2021 season next Saturday when the Trailblazers host No. 14 Missouri State. Kickoff inside Greater Zion Stadium is slated for 7 p.m.
