Trailblazers close season with 3-1 Senior Day victory over California Baptist

Dixie State volleyball closed its Fall 2021 season on a high note on Saturday, claiming a 3-1 (25-19, 25-16, 18-25, 25-18) victory over California Baptist inside the Burns Arena.

The match served as the Trailblazers' (7-15, 6-8 WAC) Senior Day, as Lizzy Clark, Rebekah Farris, Jordyn Nelson, Siara Roberts, Abigail Shaffer, Lacie Tenney, Lauolive Tonga, and Megan Treanor each took part in their final match at DSU.

"Sending these seniors out with a win has been most of our focus this week," Head Coach Camilla Hafoka said. "These seniors have been in the program so long and have been through so much. They were here when we were a Division II program and have helped make the journey to Division I. They've seen all the highs and all the lows. We tried to make this weekend about them to send them off well, but also for me to be appreciative of them for helping build the foundation of what we want our program to be."

After conceding three consecutive points to start the first set, Dixie State recorded five of the next seven points to draw even at 5-5. The teams went back-and-forth over the next few plays until the Trailblazers tallied an 8-3 stretch powered by two kills each from Treanor and Clark to build a five-point lead at 15-10. The Lancers countered with a quick 4-2 run to trim the lead to 16-14, but DSU answered with four consecutive points for a set-high lead at 20-14. CBU bounced back with a 4-1 spurt to pull to within three points at 21-18, but the Trailblazers mirrored the effort with a 4-1 run of their own to claim the 25-19 set victory.

Neither team managed to build a lead of more than two points over the first 14 plays of the second set as the two sides played to a 7-7 tie. Dixie State bucked the trend with a 4-0 run to take an 11-7 lead. The Lancers answered with a 4-1 run to draw within one point at 12-11, but would get no closer. DSU countered with a decisive 13-5 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-16 set triumph. Whittnee Nihipali and Bridgett Talia each posted a kill and a block during the run, while Mykenna Nelson tallied just her seventh career kill from the libero position.

In a near carbon copy of the first two sets, the teams traded points through the first portion of the third set and played to an 8-8 tie. The Trailblazers broke the tie with a 6-3 stretch, highlighted by a kill and a service ace from Kate Hardy, to build a 14-11 advantage. CBU answered with five of the next seven points to pull even at 16-16, then forced a fourth set with a 9-2 stretch to earn the 25-18 set victory.

Dixie State flipped the script on how the previous three sets had started early in the fourth frame, racing to a 10-4 lead behind two kills and a block by Clark and two kills from Hannah Howard. The Lancers managed to trim the lead to 15-12, but the Trailblazers took control with a 4-1 spurt to extend the advantage back to 19-13. DSU maintained its lead from there and sealed the win with a Treanor kill for a 25-18 set win and 3-1 match victory.

The Trailblazers finished with 51 kills and a .262 hitting percentage. Five DSU players recorded at least seven kills, led by Nihipali with a match-high 12 kills to go with five digs and two service aces. Howard and Clark both added nine kills, while Clark also finished with a match-best six blocks. Talia chipped in eight kills, and Treanor tallied seven kills.
