Dixie State women's basketball team took on Portland State in the first road game of the season and fell with a final score of 80-52.
What Head Coach JD Gustin said: "It was a great road game experience tonight for our team and I was pleased with our first half.
We have to give credit to their game plan, Portland State's zone sped up our kids and kept us out of rhythm."
How it Happened: Dixie State jumped to a narrow 5-4 lead early in the first quarter. Then both teams went on a 2 minute scoring drought that was broken by a jumper by
Breaunna Gillen. As the first quarter ended the Trailblazers trailed 13-11.
Maddie Warren sunk a three pointer to start the second quarter for DSU. However, Portland State answered by going on a 13-0 run over the next four minutes. Gillen ended the Blazers cold streak by driving to the hoop and putting up a floating jumper in the paint. At the end of the first half, Dixie State trailed 36-22. The Vikings outscored the Blazers 23-11 in the second quarter.
Dixie State had a big third quarter scoring 21 points but still trailed 59-43 going into the fourth quarter.
The Blazers struggled in a five minute scoring drought to start the fourth quarter while Portland State took off on a 16-0 run. The drought was broken by Emily Isaacson who worked it in the post for a layup. Isaacson then sparked a 7-0 run by Dixie State. The Blazers held the Vikings to just two points in the final three minutes of the game.
The game concluded with a final score of 80-52 in favor of Portland State.
Leaders: Dixie State had two Trailblazers score in double figures. Gillen led the way with 19 points going 9-16 from the field.
Talia Sireni also had double digit points with 11.
Isaacson had a great night on the boards pulling down 10 rebounds.
Comparison: Dixie State ended the night shooting 33% from the field, 14 % from beyond the arc and 71% from the free throw line. DSU ended with 37 rebounds, eight assists, four steals and 14 turnovers. The Blazers had 28 points in the paint.
Portland State ended the game shooting 39% from the field, 40% from the three and 73% from the line. The Vikings totaled 52 rebounds, 23 assists, 12 steals and eight turnovers. PSU had 34 points in the paint and 18 points off DSU turnovers.
Notes to Know: DSU is now 1-1 overall on the season. Gillen has now scored in double figures in two consecutive games.
