Trailblazers rally for five-set victory over Seattle U

Dixie State volleyball battled to a back-and-forth five-set (19-25, 27-25, 23-25, 25-22, 15-8) victory over Seattle U on Thursday, rallying from a 2-1 deficit for the 3-2 win.

The Trailblazers (6-15, 5-8 WAC) posted season-best marks in kills (71), assists (66) and hitting percentage (.300) in the comeback victory, while a season-high four players finished in double figures in kills.

Whittnee Nihipali led the charge at the net, matching a career-high with 19 kills, while Megan Treanor recorded a season-high 16 kills and nine digs. Treanor moved to No. 2 on the DSU Career Kills list in the process and now sits at 826 career kills. Kate Hardy finished with 12 kills to go with five digs and five total blocks, and Lizzy Clark posted a season-high 10 kills.

Jordyn Nelson turned in a career performance, directing traffic up front to the tune of a career-high 52 assists. The feat also marks a season-best tally for the Trailblazers.

Dixie State jumped out to a 5-2 lead early in the first set, but the Redhawks countered with a 5-0 spurt to take a 7-5 advantage. The Trailblazers answered with a run of their own, using a 6-2 stretch to retake the lead at 11-9, but it wouldn't last long. Seattle U bounced back with a 6-0 run to pull ahead at 15-11. DSU answered with three consecutive points to trim the lead to 16-14, but would get no closer as the Redhawks held on for a 25-19 set victory.

Seattle U looked to pick up where it left off in the second set and build an 11-7 lead. Unfazed, the Trailblazers rattled off an 8-4 run to pull even at 15-15. The teams matched each other point-for-point over the next 10 points, until DSU scored on back-to-back plays to take a 22-20 lead. Seattle mirrored the DSU effort and scored the next two points to force another deadlock at 22-22. From there the two sides went back and forth again, until the Trailblazers broke a 25-25 tie with two straight points to claim a 27-25 triumph and pull even at 1-1 in the match.

The Trailblazers scored six of the first nine points of the third set to establish an early 6-3 lead. Seattle responded with a quick 4-1 spurt to pull even at 7-7, but DSU answered with three straight points to push the lead back to three points at 10-7. The Redhawks quickly erased the lead with an 8-3 stretch to build a 15-13 advantage. Dixie State would fight back to tie the score at 18-18 and 20-20, but it wasn't enough as the visitors scored five of the final eight points to seal the 25-23 set win and take a 2-1 match lead.

Needing a victory to keep the match alive, Dixie State used its biggest run of the match to jump out to a 12-4 lead in the fourth set. Undaunted, the Redhawks slowly began to chip away at the DSU lead. Seattle stayed within striking distance, then used a 6-1 run to turn a 19-14 deficit into a 20-20 tie. The teams traded points over the next four plays, until the Trailblazers forced the decisive fifth set with three consecutive points to earn the 25-22 set win.

After playing to a 3-3 tie to start the fifth set, DSU used a quick 4-1 spurt to take a 7-4 lead. The Redhawks trimmed the lead to 8-7, but wouldn't get any closer. The Trailblazers closed the door on Seattle with a decisive 7-1 run to grab the 15-8 set triumph and the 3-2 match win.

The Trailblazers will close the Fall 2021 season with a Saturday afternoon Senior Day matchup against California Baptist. Opening serve is set for Noon.
