Volleyball closes road trip with sweep of Seattle U

Dixie State volleyball closed its three-match road swing with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-21) sweep of Seattle U on Saturday inside the Redhawk Center in Seattle, Washington.

The Trailblazers (4-9, 3-2 WAC) posted a season-best .278 hitting percentage and matched a season-high 13 total blocks en route to their second sweep of the season.

Dixie State built an early 7-4 lead in the first set in what would be the largest lead for either side until late in the set. The teams traded points from there as the remainder of the frame saw 12 ties and six lead changes. DSU took an 18-16 advantage late in the set, but Seattle U responded with a 4-1 spurt to pull ahead at 20-19. Unfazed, the Trailblazers rattled off six consecutive points to claim the 25-20 set win.

The teams continued to match the other nearly point-for-point throughout a large portion of a second set that saw 14 more ties and four lead changes. DSU used a 3-0 run late in the set to turn a 16-15 Seattle U lead into an 18-16 advantage. The Redhawks answered with back-to-back points to pull even at 18-18. The Trailblazers countered with four straight points to retake the lead at 22-18, then held off a final Seattle push to earn a 25-21 victory and build a 2-0 lead in the match.

Seattle U bucked the point-trading trend early in the third set and used an 8-0 run to turn a 7-4 DSU lead into a 12-7 advantage. Dixie State countered with a 10-3 run to take a 17-15 lead. The Redhawks pulled to within one point on two separate occasions from there, but the Trailblazers closed the frame on a 6-3 run to close the 25-21 set victory and win the match.

Megan Treanor led the Trailblazers with 13 kills and six total blocks, while Kate Hardy finished with nine digs and matched a career-high with nine total blocks. Whittnee Nihipali added nine kills and nine digs, while Hannah Howard chipped in seven kills and three blocks.

Dixie State will play a conference home-and-home against in-state foe Utah Valley next week, hosting the Wolverines on Thursday before traveling to Orem for a rematch on Saturday.
