Trailblazers fall in five sets to Utah Valley

Dixie State volleyball dropped a five-set decision to Utah Valley on Thursday, falling 3-2 (25-23, 22-25, 25-23, 16-25, 13-15) inside the Burns Arena.

The first set went back and forth as Dixie State (4-10, 3-3 WAC) and Utah Valley traded scoring runs. The Wolverines started it off, jumping out to a 12-7 lead. The Trailblazers roared back with a 14-2 run to build what seemed to be an insurmountable lead at 21-14. But UVU refused to go down without a fight and countered with an 8-1 run to pull even at 22-22. Unfazed, DSU closed the set with a 3-1 spurt to claim a 25-23 triumph and take 1-0 lead in the match.

The Trailblazers scored the first three points of the second set to build an early 3-0 advantage. From there, neither team would lead by more than two points until late in the set. With the score tied at 20-20, DSU notched back-to-back points to take a 22-20 lead. UVU countered with a 5-0 run to steal set two, 25-22, and tie the match at 1-1.

Dixie State jumped out to an 8-5 lead in a third set that played out like the first set with the teams trading scoring runs. Utah Valley bounced back with a 5-0 spurt to build a 10-8 advantage. The Trailblazers responded with a quick 4-1 run to retake the lead at 12-11, but the Wolverines immediately answered with a 7-2 stretch to take an 18-14 lead. DSU countered with five of the next six points to pull even at 19-19 before UVU scored three of the next four points to pull ahead at 22-20. Needing one final run, the Trailblazers dug in and closed the fourth set on a 5-1 run to nab a 25-23 victory and a 2-1 overall lead.

Utah Valley sprinted to a 7-1 lead in the fourth set and never looked back, answering each DSU comeback attempt throughout the frame. The Trailblazers used a 4-1 spurt to trim the deficit to 8-5, but UVU answered with a 6-3 run to push the advantage to 14-8. After a DSU point, the Wolverines countered with a back-breaking 8-3 run to take a 22-12 lead, and eventually the 25-16 win, to force the decisive fifth set.

The Trailblazers jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the fifth set before the Wolverines responded with an 8-3 run to take a 9-8 lead. DSU would score the next point to pull even at 9-9, but UVU scored the next three points to pull ahead at 12-9. Dixie State trimmed the lead to one point at 12-11 and later at 14-13, but Utah Valley got the final point it needed to snag a 15-13 victory and clinch the 3-2 win.

Dixie State hit .135 for the match with 49 kills and finished with 10 total blocks. Jordyn Nelson posted her second double-double of the season with 21 assists and 10 digs, while Whittnee Nihipali finished one dig shy of a double-double with 13 kills and nine digs. Kate Hardy recorded eight kills and seven total blocks, while Lizzy Clark added six total blocks with three solo stops.

The Trailblazers and Wolverines now head to Orem for a rematch on Saturday inside the Lockhart Arena. Opening serve is set for 1 p.m.
