Trailblazers return home for two matches against Chicago State, Houston Baptist

OPENING TOUCH: Dixie State men's returns home for two of its final four home matches against Chicago State University and Houston Baptist.

TRANSITIONING INTO THE WAC: Dixie State enters its second season of Division I play as a member of the Western Athletic Conference. Dixie State is scheduled to play an 18-game schedule including eight non-conference games and 10 conference games.

DIXIE STATE VS. CHICAGO STATE: Dixie State men's soccer has never played Chicago State in institution history.

DIXIE STATE VS. HOUSTON BAPTIST: Dixie State men's soccer has played Houston Baptist one time in its history. Their meeting was in the Spring 2021 season on March 20. Dixie State won that match 2-1 in overtime. The goals were scored by Niko Shuov and Logan Beus.

KNOW YOUR FOE: 
CHICAGO STATE: Chicago State is currently sitting in 10th place in the Western Athletic Conference. They are 2-7-1 on the season so far and currently on a six game losing streak. Their last match was a 3-1 loss to Grand Canyon University. Chicago State has scored six goals in their ten games this season, but just one in thier last four matches. Chicago is 0-3-0 in WAC play this season.


HOUSTON BAPTIST: Houston Baptist is currently 11th in the Western Athletic Conference. They are 2-8-0 this season with their two wins being against St. Thomas and Huston-Tillotson. Houston Baptist is 0-3 in conference play so far and on a five game losing streak. They have scored three goals in their last five games, with their only multi-goal game being a 6-0 win against Huston-Tillotson and a 5-2 loss to Florida Atlantic.

COACHING STAFF: Jonny Broadhead (Colorado State-Pueblo, 2004) is in his fourth season as Dixie State head coach. Broadhead has a 34-37-3 overall record at Dixie State. He has led the program to 10 or more wins in two of his three seasons at the helm. 

Broadhead has brought with him assistant coaches Kyle Coffee and Nick Vorberg who are both in their first seasons with DSU. 

TRAILBLAZERS PICKED TENTH IN THE WAC: Dixie State was voted to finish 10th in the WAC men's soccer preseason coaches' poll released on August 17th. Grand Canyon was picked first with six first place votes. Seattle U was picked second with four first place votes. The Trailblazers did not have any members selected to the 2021 Preseason All-WAC team.
LAST SEASON IN THE WAC: The 2020-21 season was the first season the Trailblazers competed in the WAC. The 2020-21 season faced many cancellations and games rescheduled due to COVID-19. The Trailblazers closed the 2020-21 regular season with a 3-6-0 record. DSU's three wins in the 2020-21 season came against Incarnate Word, Houston Baptist and UTRGV, all except the win over Houston Baptist were on the road.

TEAM NOTES: Dixie State is currently 1-9-0 in the 2021 season. They are on a nine-game losing streak and coming off two road losses to San Jose State and Seattle U. The team has just seven games and six conference matchups remaining this season. There are four remaining home matchups including this weekends games, and five more road matchups.

Dixie State has scored four goals this season. Daniel Brubaker leads the team in goals scored with two. John Joseph and Julian Herrera each have a goal apiece as well. Traedon Chamberlain, Cole Shaffer, Jimi Villasenor and Gian Gargurevich have all registered one assist apiece. DSU has been outshot by opponents 156-89. 

Dixie State has only one registered shutout this season, coming in the season opener against UC San Diego. That shutout is credited to Jakob Moore. Between Jakob Moore and Levi Lord the team has registered 50 saves this season.
