Trailblazers stopped by Chicago State

Dixie State volleyball had its return to the Burns Arena spoiled by Chicago State on Thursday, as the Trailblazers fell in straight sets (16-25, 16-25, 18-25) in their lone match of the week.

The Trailblazers (5-13, 4-6 WAC) and Cougars battled back and forth through the first half of the first set, as neither side managed a lead of more than two points until CSU used an 8-3 run to turn a slim 12-11 lead into a 20-14 advantage. DSU would score two of the next three points, but Chicago State responded by scoring the next four points to claim the set.

After playing to a 5-5 tie early in the second set, the Cougars again claimed the edge with a big run. This time, CSU used a 15-5 spurt to turn the deadlocked score into a match-high lead of 10 points at 20-10. Dixie State answered with a 6-2 run to trim the lead to 22-16, but wouldn't get any closer as the Cougars scored three consecutive points to grab the set victory and a 2-0 lead in the match.

The third set played out in a near carbon copy of the first as the teams traded points and leads through the early portion of the frame. DSU would take a 10-9 lead after a kill by Chayse Daugherty, but again the Cougars responded. This time, CSU used a 14-5 run to turn its slim deficit into a commanding 23-15 advantage. The Trailblazers countered with three consecutive points, but the Cougars answered with back-to-back points to end the match.

Dixie State finished with 33 kills and a .144 hitting percentage. Hannah Howard logged DSU's lone double-digit kills performance of the night, finishing with 10 kills to go with six digs. Lizzy Clark added six kills and a team-high three total blocks.

The Trailblazers take their final road trip of the 2021 season next week for matches at New Mexico State and Grand Canyon.
