Volleyball swept by Tarleton State

The Dixie State volleyball team dropped its final match in Texas in straight sets (16-25, 34-36, 23-25) to Tarleton State on Saturday inside the Abilene Christian Teague Center.

Tarleton State jumped out to a 12-3 lead in the first set to grab the momentum early in the match. The Trailblazers scored three of the next four points to trim the lead to 13-6, but TSU countered with a 6-2 run to push the lead to 19-11. DSU responded with a 4-1 spurt to pull to within 20-15, but the Texans closed the set on a 5-1 run to claim the 25-16 win and the early lead in the match.

The teams went back and forth throughout a marathon second set that saw 21 ties and eight lead changes. Tarleton built a 12-8 lead before the Trailblazers countered with four straight points to pull even at 12-12. Both sides traded points from there until the Texans stretched the lead back to four points at 24-20. Dixie State fought off four consecutive TSU set points to draw even at 24-24. The Trailblazers then battled through four more set points and eventually took a 29-28 lead. TSU answered with two straight points to pull ahead at 30-29, but DSU matched the effort and immediately took back a 31-30 lead. The Texans then warded off three DSU match points and eventually pulled ahead for a 36-34 set win and a 2-0 match lead.

Dixie State looked to match its comeback effort from Friday night early in set three and jumped out to a 6-1 lead, but Tarleton slowly chipped away until it drew even at 12-12. The teams went back and forth from there until the Trailblazers built an 18-16 advantage late in the set. The Texans countered with an 8-3 run to jump ahead at 24-21. DSU answered with back-to-back to points to draw within 24-23, but TSU ended any thoughts of a comeback with a point on the next play for a 25-23 set win and a 3-0 sweep in the match.

The Trailblazers finished with 52 kills and a .157 hitting percentage. Jordyn Nelson posted her fourth double-double of the year with a season-high 36 assists and 15 digs, while Hannah Howard recorded her third double-double of the year with 10 kills and 12 digs. Kate Hardy finished with a team-high 13 kills to go with four total blocks.

Dixie State will host Chicago State on Thursday at 6 p.m. inside the Burns Arena in its lone match of the week.
