Dixie State downs CBU 3-2 on Senior Night

Trailblazers women soccer strong front line efforts took down California Baptist Thursday afternoon with a final score of 3-2.

WHAT HEAD COACH MOLLY ROUSE SAID: "Today was an awesome example of the team putting together two solid halves. CBU is a tough opponent who presented many challenges and we were able to exploit important moments in the attack, while limited chances against for most of the game. It was a special day, honoring our senior class, made more special by great individual performances all over the field. Overall, it was encouraging to see the group take another step forward in execution, while weathering the storm created by a solid CBU attack. We are excited to carry the momentum of today into our next match against SU on Saturday."

HOW IT HAPPENED: Dixie State started on a strong offensive attack. In the 28th minute, DSU found themselves in the box. Kalea Woodyatt sent the ball to the far side of the field and found Jill Bennett who then sent it high into the middle where Kearney Hoggan put a head on the ball sending it past CBU's keeper to give the Blazers a 1-0 lead.

With the momentum in favor of Dixie, the Trailblazers remained dominant on the front line. In the 43rd minute, Savannah Stauffer took a shot from deep outside the 18 that ricocheted off the crossbar. Kennedy Warnick drew a penalty off the rebound to set DSU up in a scoring opportunity.

Madison Henderson took the PK and sent it to the lower right side while CBU's keeper went to the left. Henderson's shot was good and DSU had a 2-0 lead at the half.

California Baptist ended the first half with nine shots and five on frame. DSU ended the first half with four shots with three on frame, two goals and two assists. Adelle Brown had five saves and a shutout in the first half.

In the second half, the Trailblazers maintained the offensive attack. In the 53rd minute, Whitley Griffiths broke through the Lancers back line and then dished the ball to a ready Bennett who hit the ball with her right foot sending it into the lower left corner of the net for a textbook goal. DSU now had a 3-0 lead.

California Baptist didn't let Dixie State come away with a shutout as the Lancers were able to get two goals in the final 30 minutes of play.

Dixie State locked on defense, focusing on forward movement in the final minutes of the game to stuff out any more scoring opportunities for CBU. As the 90 minute mark hit, the Trailblazers came away with the 3-2 win.
