Trailblazers pick up 2-1 win over Redhawks in final home game

Trailblazers women soccer finished off the 2021 fall home slate with a 2-1 victory over Seattle U on Saturday afternoon.

WHAT HEAD COACH MOLLY ROUSE SAID: "We could not be more proud of the team's ability to learn and grow, while staying completely bought into the process. Today was an excellent team performance, in which we fully executed our game plan for two halves. We are excited to see the group take a step forward in team tactics that we have continued to stress throughout the season. We were inspired to see another gritty end to a tough conference battle and we are pumped that the team was rewarded for an excellent team performance. We are looking forward to pushing the momentum of earning six points on the weekend into our final road battle vs GCU & NMSU!"

HOW IT HAPPENED: Dixie State quickly established dominance in the first half. In the 12th minute, the back line worked the ball to the far side of the field. Ashlyn VanTuessenbroek took it across the midfield and sent it to a breaking Kalea Woodyatt who got her right foot on the ball to send it soaring into the lower right corner of the net for a Dixie State goal.

Seattle U was able to answer with a goal in the 27th minute. The first half ended with a 1-1 score. Dixie State outshot Seattle in the first half with five shots and three one goal. The Redhawks had two shots with two on goal.

In the 54th minute, Seattle U dropped the ball back to the Redhawks Keeper who then sent it to midfield where it was intercepted by Emily Garbett. Garbett then dribbled it up the field and then took a hit from outside the 18 yard box. That sunk it into the left side  of the net for DSU's second goal and what ended up being the game winner.

The Blazers locked down on defense, stopping strong Redhawk attempts to tie up the game. The 90 minute mark hit and Dixie State came away with a 2-1 win.

STAT BREAKDOWN:  Dixie State was led by Brylee Roberts who had three shots with one on frame. There were six other Blazers who recorded one shot a piece including Woodyatt and Garbett who each scored a goal.

DSU ended the game with nine shots and six on frame with two goals and one assist.

SU ended the game with nine shots, six on frame, one goal and one assist. The Redhawks ended the game with just four saves. In total, Dixie had five saves.

NOTES TO KNOW: Dixie State is now 611-1 overall on the season and 2-5-1 in WAC action. Dixie State has now scored eight goals in the first 10 minutes of a half and three goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half.  DSU has 18 total goals on the season.
