Mykenna Nelson joins 1,000-dig club in loss at Utah Valley

Dixie State sophomore libero Mykenna Nelson made history on Saturday, surpassing the 1,000 career digs mark in the Trailblazers' 3-0 loss at Utah Valley in Orem, Utah.

Nelson recorded 11 digs to push her career total to 1,001 digs and became just the fifth DSU player to tally 1,000 career digs.

The Trailblazers (4-11, 3-4 WAC) scored the first point of the match on a kill by Hannah Howard and would pull even at 2-2 and 3-3, but that's as close as it would get in the first set. The Wolverines used a 10-3 run midway through the frame to turn a slim 10-8 lead into a 20-11 advantage and eventually a 25-15 win.

Dixie State looked to bounce back in set two and built an early 4-2 lead. But like the first set, Utah Valley used a big run to take control. The Wolverines countered with a 14-3 spurt to take a 16-7 lead. DSU used an 8-5 run to trim the lead to 21-15, but UVU would hold on for a 25-18 victory.

DSU used an 8-2 run early in the third set to turn an 8-6 deficit into a 14-10 lead. The Wolverines countered with four straight points to pull even at 14-14. After a Trailblazer point, UVU responded with a 4-0 spurt to retake an 18-15 advantage. Dixie State fought back with three of the next four points to pull within one point at 19-18, but wouldn't get any closer. The Wolverines held on for a 25-21 triumph to end the match.

The Trailblazers finished with 27 kills and a .059 hitting percentage. Whittnee Nihipali recorded a team-high nine kills to go with four digs and three total blocks. Kate Hardy posted a career-high 10 total blocks, including three solo stops to go with four kills.

Dixie State will travel to Texas next week for a Friday matchup against Abilene Christian and a Saturday matchup vs. Tarleton State.
