Trailblazer Softball splits Saturday twinbill at UCCS

Dixie State softball played to a split of its Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series-opening doubleheader against UC-Colorado Springs on Saturday at Mountain Lion Field in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

On a day where both teams combined to hit eight home runs, the Trailblazers (18-6, 6-4 RMAC) were unable to dig out of an early seven-run deficit in game one, dropping an 8-5 decision. DSU bounced back in game two, claiming a 6-3 win to salvage the doubleheader split.

GAME ONE – UCCS 8, Dixie State 5

Dixie State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Meagan Anders drove the first pitch she saw over the fence in right center field for her first collegiate home run.

However, the lead evaporated quickly in the bottom of the second, as UCCS struck for eight runs on seven hits and three DSU errors to build an 8-1 advantage.

After two scoreless innings, the Trailblazers trimmed the lead to 8-4 in the top of the fifth on a three-run blast to left field by Hannah Hughbanks.

Dixie State tacked on another run in the top of the sixth when Anders belted her second solo home run of the day to cut the lead to 8-5. But DSU would get no closer, stranding two base runners later in the sixth and another in the seventh, and UCCS clinched the victory.

The Trailblazers tallied eight total hits in the loss, led by Anders with two home runs and two runs scored.

Carissa Burgess (9-2) took the loss in the pitcher's circle, while Ashtyn Bauerle notched six strikeouts in 4.1 innings pitched in relief.

GAME TWO – Dixie State 6, UCCS 3

In an almost carbon copy of the first game of the day, Dixie State took a 1-0 lead on an Anders RBI in the second inning of game two. Anders drove a sacrifice fly to left field to score Kaylan Walker from third to build the early advantage.

And, like the first game, the lead didn't last long. UCCS answered with a two-run home run in the bottom of the second to claim a 2-1 lead.

The Trailblazers pulled even at 2-2 in the top of the third when Malory Eldredge crushed a 1-1 pitch over the center field fence for her first collegiate home run.

Dixie State jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs on two hits and two UCCS errors. Shea Clements reached on a UCCS fielding error to open the inning, then moved to second when Lindsay Altfillisch drove a pinch-hit single to center field for her first collegiate hit. After Laura Lockard re-entered to run at second base, both runners scored when Walker smashed a two-run double to right center field. Walker later scored on an RBI-groundout by Anders.

DSU added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Hughbanks blasted her second home run of the day to center field to push the lead to 6-2.

UCCS pulled one run back in the bottom of the seventh on a leadoff home run to trim the lead to 6-3, but the Trailblazers retired the next three batters to close out the win.

The Trailblazers claimed the win despite recording just four hits in game two, as four different played recorded one hit.

Cambrie Hazel (7-3) earned the win in the pitcher's circle, allowing four hits with seven strikeouts in the complete-game victory.

DSU and UCCS will close the four-game series with a second doubleheader at Mountain Lion Field on Sunday at 11 a.m.
