Trailblazers and Mountain Lions split Sunday doubleheader

The Dixie State softball team salvaged a doubleheader split for the second straight day against UC-Colorado Springs on Sunday at Mountain Lion Field in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

The Trailblazers (19-7, 7-5 RMAC) took an early lead in game one before the Mountain Lions (10-13, 6-6- RMAC) came roaring back for a 7-1 win. Dixie State bounced back in game two to claim a 6-2 win and an overall series split.

GAME ONE – UCCS 7, Dixie State 1

Like the first two games of the series, Dixie State took an early 1-0 lead in the first game on Sunday when Hannah Hughbanks blasted the first pitch of the game over the center field fence.

But, also like the first two games on Saturday, UCCS responded immediately. UCCS hit a solo home run and a two-run blast in the bottom of the first inning to take a 3-1 lead.

The Mountain Lions added one run in the second, two runs in the fourth inning, and a final run in the sixth inning to clinch the 7-1 victory.

The Trailblazers finished with six total hits, led by Malory Eldredge with two hits.

Ashtyn Bauerle (2-2) took the loss in the pitcher's circle, while Carissa Burgess notched two strikeouts in 2.2 innings of relief.

GAME TWO – Dixie State 6, UCCS 2

Dixie State opened a 2-0 lead in the third inning of game two when Mikaela Thomson blasted a pinch-hit, two-run double to right field.

UCCS tied the game at 2-2 with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth. The Mountain Lions loaded the bases later in the frame, but the Trailblazers escaped the jam without any further damage.

The Trailblazers jumped back in front at 4-2 with two runs in the top of the sixth. Eldredge picked up an RBI while reaching on a fielder's choice, then later stole home on a double steal play.

Dixie State sealed the win in the top of the seventh when Thomson and Riley Tyteca each belted a solo home run to push the score to the final tally of 6-2.

DSU finished with nine total hits in game two, led by Thomson with two hits and 3 RBI.

Cambrie Hazel started the game in the circle, allowing two hits with four strikeouts. Burgess (10-2) earned the win in relief, adding one strikeout in two scoreless innings.

The Trailblazers now return to Karl Brooks Field to host Colorado Mesa and Adams State in an RMAC pod series on Saturday and Sunday.
