Trailblazer Softball splits on final day in Denver

No. 11 Dixie State softball played to a split of its Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference pod series doubleheader on Sunday at the Regency Athletic Complex in Denver, Colorado.

The Trailblazers (17-5, 5-3 RMAC) started the day on a sour note, dropping an 11-3 decision to MSU Denver in six innings. DSU bounced back in the final game of the series with a 9-2 victory over Black Hills State.

GAME ONE – MSU Denver 11, Dixie State 3 (6 innings)

Dixie State took an early 1-0 lead when Kori Gahn singled to center field to score Hannah Hughbanks from second base in the top of the first.

MSU Denver wasted no time taking the lead away, blasting a two-out, three-run home run in the bottom of the first to build a 3-1 advantage. The Roadrunners added two runs in the second inning, one run in the third, and three more in the fourth to extend the lead to 9-1.

The Trailblazers extended the game with two runs on two hits in the top of the fifth. After a Hughbanks walk and a Malory Eldredge double, Gahn drove a sacrifice fly to left field, followed by a Laura Lockard single to right field to cut the lead to 9-3.

The Roadrunners pulled both runs back in the bottom of the sixth, scoring two runs on three hits to clinch the 11-3 win.

Dixie State finished with seven total hits, led by Hughbanks and Eldredge with two hits each. Ashtyn Bauerle (2-1) took her first loss of the season in the circle, while Cambrie Hazel also saw time in relief.

GAME TWO – Dixie State 9, Black Hills State 2

After two scoreless innings, Dixie State took a 1-0 lead in the top of third when Shea Clements singled through the left side to score Kirsten Quigley from third.

Black Hills State countered with two runs in the bottom half of the third to take a 2-1 lead. But the lead didn't last long.

The Trailblazers took both runs back from the Yellow Jackets in the top of the fourth, scoring when Hughbanks reached on a fielder's choice, and on a sacrifice fly by Eldredge. DSU added another run in the fifth inning on a Kaylan Walker sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 4-2.

Dixie State took full control of the game in the top of the seventh, scoring five runs on five hits. Destiny Diaz provided the highlight of the frame with a three-run double to right center field. DSU later took advantage of a BHSU error to score two more runs and push the lead to the final tally of 9-2.

The Trailblazers finished with 13 total hits, led by Gahn, Lockard, and Diaz with two hits each.

Carissa Burgess improved to 9-1 in the pitcher's circle, striking out five BHSU batters in the complete-game victory.

Dixie State will travel to Colorado Springs, Colorado, next week for a four-game RMAC series against UCCS.
