Trailblazers drop heartbreaker at No. 21 Colorado Mesa, 59-54

Ali Franks moves to No. 2 on DSU Women's Basketball scoring list

The Dixie State women's basketball team fell in heartbreaking fashion on Saturday, dropping a 59-54 result to conference leader and No. 21-ranked Colorado Mesa inside Brownson Arena in Grand Junction, Colorado.
 
The Trailblazers (14-9, 9-8 RMAC) raced to a 19-9 lead, shooting 63 percent (7-of-11) from the field through the first 10 minutes of the contest. Ali Franks scored seven points, while Keslee Stevenson added five points.
 
Dixie State picked up where it left off in the second quarter, pushing the lead to as many 23 points at 38-15 with a little more than a minute until halftime. The Mavericks closed the half on a 6-0 run to pull to within 38-21 at the break.
 
Both teams went cold in the third quarter, as Dixie State shot 25 percent (3-of-12) and Colorado Mesa shot 17 percent (3-of-17) from the field, and the Trailblazers took a 46-32 lead into the final frame.
 
Franks hit a 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter to push the lead to 49-32. And then the Mavericks made their move, starting on a decisive 27-5 run over the final eight minutes to steal away the 59-54 win.
 
Colorado Mesa connected on 50 percent (6-of-12) from the field in the final period, while DSU stayed cold, connecting on just 22 percent (2-of-9) from the field. Meanwhile, the Mavericks attempted 10 more free throws than the Trailblazers during the stretch, converting on a perfect 14-of-14 from the charity stripe in the final quarter.
 
Overall, Dixie State shot 41 percent (18-of-43) from the field, 36 percent (7-of-19) from 3-point range, and 73 percent (11-of-15) from the free throw line.
 
Franks continued to move up the DSU Women's Basketball all-time scoring list, posting 24 points to push her career total to 1,076 and move to No. 2 on the list.  Madi Loftus added 14 points and three assists.
 
The Trailblazers return home next week to host Adams State on Friday and Fort Lewis on Saturday. Both games are scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
