Trailblazers hold off Adams State Friday, 59-53

Dixie State women's basketball opened its final RMAC homestand of the 2019-20 season with a win on Friday, holding on for a 59-53 triumph over Adams State inside the Burns Arena.

Neither team managed a lead greater than three points in the first quarter, as the opening 10 minutes saw five lead changes and two ties. Adams State eventually took a 15-13 lead to the second quarter. Keslee Stevenson scored 11 of DSU's first-quarter points, draining three triples in the opening period.

After the teams traded baskets in the opening minutes of the second frame, Dixie State (15-9, 10-8 RMAC) used an 11-0 run to build a 29-18 lead. Madi Loftus buried two 3-pointers during the run, while Makayla Johnson added four points. The Grizzlies countered with consecutive baskets to trim the lead to 31-22 at halftime.

The Trailblazers pushed the lead to a game-high mark of 16 points at 48-32 when Ashley Greenwood converted a jumper in the paint late in the third quarter. Ali Franks drained a pair of triples during the frame, while Chesney Stevens added four points.

Adams State responded in the fourth quarter, using an 8-0 run midway through the frame to pull to within 55-51. But it was too little, too late, as Dixie State was able to hold on for the 59-53 victory.

Dixie State shot 38 percent (21-of-54) from the field, 32 percent (9-of-28) from 3-point range, and 44 percent (8-of-18) from the free throw line.  Stevens and Stevenson scored 14 points each to lead the DSU scoring attack, while Stevens added eight rebounds. Loftus finished with 13 points, and Franks added eight points.

Dixie State will host Fort Lewis on Saturday on Senior Night. The Trailblazers will honor Franks, Loftus, Stevens, and Deshka Olson before the game. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
