Trailblazers fall at Western Colorado Friday, 61-49

Dixie State women's basketball fell at Western Colorado on Saturday, dropping a 61-49 decision inside Paul Wright Gymnasium in Gunnison, Colorado.

The Trailblazers (14-8, 9-7 RMAC) and Mountaineers battled through a low-scoring first quarter with the home side taking a 9-7 lead into the second quarter, as both teams struggled to convert from the field.

Western Colorado bucked the trend early in the second quarter, jumping out to a stretch that saw the home squad outscore the Trailblazers 35-17 over the two middle quarters and build a 44-24 advantage heading to the final frame.

Dixie State came alive in the fourth quarter, shooting 63 percent (7-of-11) over the final 10 minutes while outscoring WCU by a 25-17 count. But it wouldn't be enough to overcome the 20-point deficit, and the Mountaineers clinched the 61-49 win.

The Trailblazers shot 32 percent (16-of-49) from the field, 15 percent (3-of-20) from 3-point range, and 73 percent (14-of-19) from the free throw line. Keslee Stevenson led with nine points and five rebounds, while Chesney Stevens and Makayla Johnson finished with eight points each.

Dixie State will close its four-game road swing on Saturday at No. 21 Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
