Trailblazers Slug Past Northwest Nazarene Friday, 10-4

Dixie State pushed its season-opening win streak to four-straight thanks to 10-4 victory over Northwest Nazarene Friday afternoon at Reeder Field on the Cal State LA campus.

The Trailblazers (4-0) broke open a scoreless game in the top of the third with a towering three-run homer off the bat of Cade Spurlin. Braden Stutzman started the rally with a one-out bunt single, then after Jake Engel reached on two-out safety, Spurlin cleared the bases with his second round-tripper of the season.

NNU (0-1) struck for a run in the home fourth, but Dixie State got it back in the fifth with a bases loaded balk with two outs in the frame. The Blazers would tack on another run in the seventh before plating three more runs in the eighth on RBI-hits from Stutzman, Engel and Tyler Hollow to extend to an 8-1 lead. Drake Benner (1, first collegiate HR) and Stutzman (1) would each homer in the ninth to provide the exclamation points to DSU's day.

Dixie State outhit NNU 14-8, including three hits for Stutzman in the lead-off spot with two RBI and three runs scored, and a 3-for-3 effort with a pair of doubles and two runs for Tanner Harper. Junior righthander Justin Dunham (W, 1-0) struck out a season-high seven and surrendered one run on four hits in 5.1 innings to earn his first win of the year.

The Trailblazers will play a split doubleheader on Saturday as they face NNU at 11:30 a.m. (PT), followed by a date vs. host Cal State LA at 6:30 p.m. (PT).
