Trailblazers rally for 5-4 win over Hawai’i Hilo

Destiny Diaz hits 6th-inning grand slam to spark comeback

The Dixie State softball opened play at the 2020 Courtyard Classic in dramatic fashion on Thursday, rallying from a 4-0 deficit to force extra innings and claim a thrilling 5-4 triumph over Hawai'i Hilo in nine innings at the Canyons Softball Complex.

Hawai'i Hilo spread its four runs over the first five innings of the contest, scoring one in the first, one in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Meanwhile, the Trailblazers (2-1) managed just three hits and left five runners on base over the same stretch.

But something clicked for DSU in the sixth inning. Shea Clements battled to a full-count walk, followed by a Kori Gahn single to center field. Meagan Anders then loaded the bases after another full-count walk.

With the bases loaded and just one out, DSU seemed to lose some momentum after a foul-out to the third base side. But Destiny Diaz made sure the Trailblazers wouldn't come away empty-handed. Diaz belted the first pitch of the ensuing at-bat over the center field fence for her second career grand slam. The blast tied the game at 4-4 and moved all the momentum into the DSU dugout.

Neither team was able to break the draw in the seventh inning despite having multiple base runners aboard, sending the game into extra innings with the international tiebreaker rule in effect.

Each team placed a runner on second base to begin the eighth inning, but again, neither could score the decisive run. That changed in the ninth inning when Clements notched a leadoff bunt single to move Brenna Cornwall to third. Gahn then ended the game with a sacrifice fly to center field as the Trailblazers completed the comeback and the 5-4 victory.

Clements enjoyed the lone multi-hit performance of the day for DSU, finishing with three hits in three at-bats, while Diaz led the way with 4 RBI on the grand slam. Ashtyn Bauerle made her first career start for the Trailblazers, striking out three in 6.1 innings of work. Cambrie Hazel (1-1) earned the win in relief, tossing 2.2 no-hit innings with four strikeouts to close out the victory.

Dixie State will play two games at the Canyons Softball Complex on Friday, taking on St. Mary's at 12:30 p.m. and Concordia-Portland at 3 p.m.
