Trailblazers sweep on Day Two at 2020 Courtyard Classic

Dixie State softball picked up its third and fourth wins of the season on Friday, playing to a sweep of its two games at the 2020 Courtyard Classic at the Canyons Softball Complex.

The Trailblazers (4-1) held off St. Mary's for a 5-3 victory in the first game of the day, before rolling past Concordia-Portland for a 12-2, five-inning win in the second game. With the wins, DSU extends its win streak to four games.

GAME ONE – Dixie State 5, St. Mary's 3

Dixie State scored one run in the first, second, and third innings on RBI hits from Kori Gahn, Destiny Diaz, and Kaylan Walker to build an early 3-1 lead over St. Mary's.

The Trailblazers tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning when Brenna Cornwall belted a 2-RBI double to left field to push the lead to 5-1.

The Rattlers pulled one run back in both the fifth and the seventh innings, but stranded two base runners in the seventh as DSU closed out the 5-3 victory.

Gahn and Hannah Hughbanks led DSU at the plate, finishing with two hits each, while Cornwall posted a team-high 2 RBI. Carissa Burgess improved to 2-0 on the season, picking up a complete-game victory with seven strikeouts.

GAME TWO – Dixie State 12, Concordia-Portland 2 (5 innings)

The Trailblazers set the tone early in its five-inning win over the Cavaliers, scoring multiple runs in three of the first four innings.

Laura Lockard smashed her first collegiate home run in the top of the first, belting a 1-1 pitch over the left field fence to give DSU a 3-0 lead. Hughbanks set up the play with a leadoff double, while Gahn singled to left field for her third hit of the day. Hughbanks followed up her first-inning double with an RBI-single in the second inning to extend the DSU lead to 4-0.

Dixie State used four more hits and one Concordia error to score three more runs in the third inning. Lockard picked up her fourth RBI of the day with a sacrifice fly to right field, followed by an RBI-double by Brylee Rudd, who later scored on a Cavalier fielding error to push the advantage to 7-0.

Concordia ended the DSU shutout bid in the bottom of the third, using back-to-back RBI singles to trim the lead to 7-2.

The Trailblazers countered with five more runs on five hits and one error in the bottom of the fourth to extinguish any hopes of a Cavalier comeback. Hughbanks led off the inning with a solo home run to right field, followed by a 2-RBI double by Mikaela Thomson, who later scored when Lockard tripled down the right field line. Rudd accounted for the final DSU run of the game with an RBI-single up the middle, scoring Lockard from third to wrap up the 12-2 win.

Hughbanks (3-for-3/HR/2 RBI), Lockard (2-for-2/HR/3B/4 RBI), and Rudd (2-for-3/2 RBI) led the Trailblazers the plate, while Thomson also added a pair of hits. Cambrie Hazel earned her second win of the year in the circle, while Brianna Castellon made her first appearance in a Trailblazer uniform. Castellon tossed two no-hit innings with a strikeout to help close out the win.

Dixie State will take on Cal State Dominguez Hills (12:30 p.m.) and Western Washington (3 p.m.) on Saturday in the final day of the Courtyard Classic at the Canyons Softball Complex.
