Trailblazers open season with DH split vs. Central Washington

The Dixie State softball team opened the 2020 season with a doubleheader split against Central Washington on Tuesday at Karl Brooks Field.

The Trailblazers (1-1) dropped a 5-2 decision in Game One, before bouncing back with a 13-5 five-inning victory in Game Two.

A trio of DSU freshman led the way at the plate in their first collegiate games, including Hannah Hughbanks, Laura Lockard, and Kaylan Walker.

Hughbanks posted an .800 batting average between the two games, going 4-for-5 at the plate with 4 RBI and a double and a triple. Lockard went 2-for-3 with two doubles and 2 RBI, while Walker notched three hits and a single RBI. Overall, the freshman trio combined for nine hits and 8 RBI.

Senior Kori Gahn posted the only other multi-hit performance for the Trailblazers on opening day, going 2-for-3 with 2 RBI in the first game of the day.

In the circle, Cambrie Hazel struck out seven CWU batters in four innings of work in the game-one loss. Ashtyn Bauerle made her Trailblazer debut, allowing no hits and just one base runner over the final three innings of the game.

Carissa Burgess picked up her first win of the year in game two, striking out four over five innings pitched.

GAME ONE – Central Washington 5, Dixie State 2

The Wildcats took advantage of a pair of walks and a hit-by-pitch in the top of the first inning, scoring two runs to take an early 2-0 lead.

Dixie State cut the lead in half in the bottom half of the inning when Gahn drove a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing Hughbanks to score from third.

After a scoreless second inning, CWU added one run in the third inning and two more runs in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead.

DSU countered with one run in the bottom of the fifth to pull to within 5-2, then saw a golden opportunity slip away in the sixth inning. The Trailblazers loaded the bases with two outs, but a groundout to the pitcher ended the inning and the DSU threat.

Dixie State would also place a runner on base in the seventh inning, but could not cut into the CWU lead. In all, the Trailblazers stranded 11 base runners in the loss.

GAME TWO – Dixie State 13, Central Washington 5 (Five Innings)

Central Washington picked up where if left off in Game Two, pushing across two runs in the top of the first inning.

Dixie State responded in the bottom of the frame, using five runs and three CWU errors, along with a critical illegal pitch, to break the game open in the first inning. After tying the game at 2-2 on RBI hits from Walker and Mikaela Thomson, the DSU inning appeared to come to an end on a Lockard flyout to right field. However, an illegal pitch was called, and Lockard blasted a 2-RBI double to right center field two pitches later. The Trailblazers would tack on four more runs in the inning to build an 8-2 lead.

The Wildcats pulled one run back in the top of the second, trimming the lead to 8-3, but DSU countered with three runs in the bottom of the third.

Central Washington cut the lead to 11-5 in the top of the fifth, but the Trailblazers duplicated the feat in the bottom of the fifth to wrap up the 13-5 win in five innings.

Dixie State will now host the 2020 Courtyard Classic, beginning on Thursday, at the Canyons Softball Complex.
