No. 11 Trailblazers split on first day in Denver

The No. 11 Dixie State softball team played to a split of its first two games of a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference pod series on Saturday at the Regency Athletic Complex in Denver, Colorado.

The Trailblazers (16-4, 4-2 RMAC) opened the day with a convincing 10-2 win in five innings over Black Hills State, followed by a heartbreaking 3-2 loss in eight innings to MSU Denver.

GAME ONE – Dixie State 10, Black Hills State 2 (5 innings)

Dixie State wasted no time building a lead against Black Hills State, scoring four runs on two hits in the bottom of the first inning. The Trailblazers loaded the bases with a pair of walks and a BHSU error. Malory Eldredge made sure the bases didn't stay loaded for long, blasting a three-run double to right center to open the scoring. Meagan Anders followed suit with a double down the left line to score Eldredge from second and push the lead to 4-0.

The Yellow Jackets cut the lead in half with a two-run home run in the top of the third inning to pull to within 4-2. But that's as close as they would get.

The Trailblazers tacked one run back onto the lead in the bottom of the third when Kasey Crawford drew a bases loaded walk. DSU then erupted for four more runs in the fourth inning to push the lead to 9-2. Shea Clements and Anders each picked up an RBI in the fourth frame, while Eldredge slugged a two-run triple to right field to push her RBI total to five.

Dixie State ended the game in the fifth inning when Clements singled up the middle to score Brenna Cornwall from second.

The Trailblazers finished with 10 total hits, led by Eldredge, Anders, Clements, and Hannah Hughbanks with two hits each. Cambrie Hazel earned the win in the pitcher's circle to improve to 6-3 on the season.

GAME TWO – MSU Denver 3, Dixie State 2 (8 innings)

The Trailblazers and Roadrunners played a to pitcher's duel throughout the nightcap, opening with two scoreless innings before Dixie State broke through with a run on a Kori Gahn RBI-single to right field in the third inning to build a 1-0 lead.

After two more scoreless innings, the Trailblazers tacked on a second run in the top of the sixth on a Kaylan Walker sacrifice fly to right field to extend the lead to 2-0.

Dixie State retired the MSUD side in order in the bottom of the sixth, and the Trailblazers appeared to be on the brink of victory. Carissa Burgess cruised in the pitcher's circle, allowing just two base runners over the first six innings. But that changed in the seventh.

After a leadoff flyout to center field, the Roadrunners finally broke through, belting a triple and a two-run home run in consecutive at-bats to pull even at 2-2.

The Trailblazers went down in order in the top of the eighth, while MSU Denver opened the bottom half of the frame with a double. MSUD moved the base runner to third on a sacrifice bunt, then clinched the win on the next play on a ground ball to shortstop, scoring the runner from third.

DSU managed just five hits in the nightcap, led by Destiny Diaz with two hits. Burgess (8-1) suffered her first loss of the year in the pitcher's circle, striking out two in the complete-game setback.

Dixie State will close the pod series with two more games on Sunday, beginning with a grudge match versus MSU Denver at 10 a.m., followed by a Noon matchup with Black Hills State.
