No. 13 Trailblazers split Monday DH with CSU-Pueblo

No. 13 Dixie State softball closed its opening series of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play on Monday, splitting a doubleheader with CSU-Pueblo at Karl Brooks Field.

The Trailblazers (15-3, 3-1 RMAC) couldn't overcome 13 stranded base runners in the first game of the day, and dropped a 5-4 decision in eight innings. In game two, Dixie State scored six runs in the fifth inning to claim a 12-4 victory in five innings.

GAME ONE – CSU-Pueblo 5, Dixie State 4 (8 innings)

CSU-Pueblo struck first in the day's opening game, turning a hit by pitch and a walk into a two-run double and a 2-0 lead.

Dixie State saw its first golden offensive opportunity in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Trailblazers loaded the bases with no outs after two walks and a Shea Clements double. But the inning came to a screeching halt on the next play when a fly ball to left field was turned into a triple play, and DSU came away empty handed.

The Trailblazers eventually broke through in the fifth inning, turning three hits and one CSUP error into two runs to tie the game at 2-2. Brenna Cornwall and Laura Lockard each picked up an RBI-single during the frame, and again it seemed DSU was poised to take the lead. However, the Thunderwolves turned a double play on a line drive to second base to end the inning.

CSU-Pueblo took the momentum of the inning-ending play to the offensive side, scoring two more runs on three hits in the top of the sixth to take a 4-2 lead.

Dixie State pulled one run back in the bottom of the sixth when Clements scored from third on a fielder's choice play to second base to trim the lead to 4-3.

The Trailblazers saw another golden opportunity slip away in the bottom of the seventh as Clements drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at 4-4 with just one out. However, the next two DSU batters were retired and the bases were left loaded.

The Thunderwolves took advantage of a pair of walks and a DSU error to re-take the lead at 5-4 in the top of the eighth.

Unfazed, Dixie State saw its first two runners reach base on a Kasey Crawford double and a Meagan Anders infield single in the bottom of the eighth. But CSU-Pueblo turned another double play on the next play, snatching a line drive to shortstop with a toss to third base for the second out. The game ended on the next play when the CSUP shortstop fielded a grounder up the middle and stepped on second base.

Dixie State finished with 11 total hits, led by Cornwall with three hits, while Hannah Hughbanks and Lockard finished with two hits each.

Cambrie Hazel (5-3) struck out six in 3.0 innings pitched in relief of Ashtyn Bauerle in the loss.

GAME TWO – Dixie State 12, CSU-Pueblo 4 (5 innings)

The Trailblazers struck first in game two, scoring two runs on three hits in the bottom of the first. Hughbanks led off with a double down the right field line, then scored when Cornwall singled through the right side. Cornwall later scored when Clements singled up the middle to push the lead to 2-0.

CSU-Pueblo quickly responded with three runs on three hits and two DSU errors in the top of the second. The Thunderwolves tacked on another run in the third inning to push the lead to 4-2.

Dixie State answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 4-4. Kori Gahn drove an RBI-double to center field, followed by another RBI-single up the middle for Clements to bring the teams even.

The Trailblazers added two more runs in the fourth inning and exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fifth to clinch the 12-4 victory. Cornwall picked up an RBI in the fourth, while Destiny Diaz, Kirsten Quigley, and Hughbanks did the same in the fifth. Lockard then ended the game with a bases-clearing, three-run double later in the final frame.

Dixie State finished with 12 total hits in game two, led by Clements with three hits and Hughbanks and Lockard with two hits each.

Carissa Burgess improved to 8-0 in the pitcher's circle, striking out three in the complete-game victory.

The Trailblazers now head to Denver for an RMAC pod series with MSU Denver and Black Hills State on Saturday and Sunday.
