No. 13 Trailblazers open RMAC play Sunday with DH sweep of CSU-Pueblo

No. 13 Dixie State softball opened Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader sweep of CSU-Pueblo on Sunday at Karl Brooks Field.

After rainy weather pushed the first day of the series to Sunday, the Trailblazers (14-2, 2-0 RMAC) ended both games via the mercy rule, opening the day with a 16-6 win in five innings before wrapping up the sweep with a 13-5 victory in six innings.

GAME ONE – Dixie State 16, CSU-Pueblo 6 (5 innings)

The Trailblazers pounded out 17 hits in game one as five different players finished with at least two hits.

Dixie State set the tone for the win in the first inning, scoring eight runs on seven hits. Hannah Hughbanks drew a leadoff walk, then scored four pitches later when Brenna Cornwall doubled to right center. The Trailblazers would bat through the order in the frame, and Hughbanks later belted a three-run triple down the right field line, while Cornwall posted another RBI with an infield single to push the lead to 8-0.

CSU-Pueblo countered over the next two innings, scoring two runs in the second and third inning to cut the DSU lead in half at 8-4.

Dixie State quickly responded in the bottom of the third, scoring six runs on seven hits to push the lead to 14-4. Laura Lockard highlighted the inning with a two-run single to center field, while four other Trailblazers posted an RBI during the frame.

Both teams scored two runs in the fourth inning to push the score to the final tally of 16-6. DSU then retired the Thunderwolves in order in the top of the fifth to clinch the win.

Cornwall led the 17-hit performance for the Trailblazers, going 4-for-4 with 2 RBI, while Kori Gahn added three hits and Hughbanks finished with two hits and 3 RBI.

Carissa Burgess improved to 7-0 in the pitcher's circle, allowing six hits with two strikeouts in the win.

GAME TWO – Dixie State 13, CSU-Pueblo 5 (6 innings)

CSU-Pueblo struck first in game two with a solo home run over the right-field fence to take a 1-0 lead. But the lead didn't last long.

Dixie State evened the score at 1-1 when Shea Clements blasted an RBI-double to center field in the bottom of the first.

The Trailblazers tacked on five more runs on six hits and two CSUP errors in the second inning. Hughbanks and Lockard opened the inning with RBI-singles, while Brylee Rudd picked up 2 RBI in the frame with a single to center field to extend the lead to 6-1.

CSU-Pueblo answered with two runs on two hits in the top of third to cut the lead to 6-3.

The Trailblazers countered with one run in the bottom of the third when Hughbanks smashed a laser over the right-field fence for a solo home run.

The Thunderwolves went on to score one run in both the fifth and sixth innings, but Dixie State answered with four runs in the fifth inning and two runs in the sixth inning to close out the 13-5 win.

Dixie State finished with 13 hits in game two. Hughbanks led DSU at the plate, going 3-for-3 with 2 RBI. Rudd and Kirsten Quigley finished with two hits each.

Cambrie Hazel (5-2) earned the win in the pitcher's circle, striking out eight in the complete-game victory.
