Trailblazers fall short at Colorado Christian Saturday, 57-55

Dixie State women's basketball dropped a 57-55 decision to Colorado Christian on Saturday inside the CCU Event Center in Lakewood, Colorado.

The Trailblazers (17-10, 12-9 RMAC) took a 5-2 lead early in the first quarter when Ali Franks buried a triple and Keslee Stevenson converted a jumper. However, Colorado Christian wrestled back the lead with a 14-2 run to close the frame with a 16-7 lead and an advantage it would not relinquish.

Dixie State used a 10-0 run over the final three minutes of the second quarter to pull to within one point at 26-25. Ashley Greenwood sparked the run with a layup in traffic, followed by a four-point play by Stevenson when she buried a triple with a foul. Breaunna Gillen then scored the final four points of the quarter.

The Trailblazers seemed to gain control of the momentum heading to halftime, but the Cougars quickly flipped the script early in the third quarter. Colorado Christian turned four DSU turnovers in the first three minutes of the period into a 36-25 lead. Dixie State fought its way back into the game with a 14-8 run to pull back to within 44-39 heading to the fourth quarter.

The Cougars quickly pushed the lead to 11 points at 50-39 early in the final frame, but again Dixie State responded, this time with a 12-3 run to cut the lead to 53-51 at the 2:55 mark. The teams traded free throws over the next two minutes, until Franks pulled DSU back within two points at 57-55. After CCU missed a pair of free throws with three seconds remaining, DSU snagged the rebound and called timeout with one final chance to tie or win. The Trailblazers worked the ball inside to Chesney Stevens, who turned and converted a jumper that appeared to send the game to overtime. However, the shot was waived off after an official review determined the shot was not attempted before the clock expired.

Dixie State shot 42 percent (21-of-49) from the field, 26 percent (5-of-19) from 3-point range, and 80 percent (8-of-10) from the free throw line. Stevenson led two players in double figures with a game-high 19 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Gillen added 10 points and six rebounds.

Despite the loss, the Trailblazers remain in seventh place in the RMAC standings. Information about the upcoming RMAC tournament and tiebreaker scenarios is scheduled to be released by the conference office on Monday.

The Trailblazers will close the regular season on Friday at Westminster in Salt Lake City. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
