Trailblazers edged at Westminster Friday, 72-69

The Dixie State women's basketball team closed the regular season with a hard-fought 72-69 loss at Westminster on Friday inside the Behnken Field House in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The Trailblazers (17-11, 12-10 RMAC) and Griffins (22-6, 17-5 RMAC) went back and forth throughout the contest, trading 10 lead changes and drawing even for eight different ties over the course of the game.

Dixie State built an early 8-3 lead after back-to-back layups by Chesney Stevens and baskets by London Pavlica and Keslee Stevenson. Westminster answered with a 16-8 run to take a 19-16 advantage. Ali Franks closed the quarter with a jumper to cut the lead to 19-18 heading to the second quarter.

The Griffins used a 14-2 run midway through the second frame to build a game-high lead of 15 points at 42-27. The Trailblazers cut the lead to 42-30 when Madi Loftus converted three free throws after being fouled on a 3-point attempt at the halftime buzzer.

The teams traded baskets throughout much of the third quarter as the lead hovered around 10 points for the first seven minutes. Dixie State closed the quarter on a 10-0 run, including a Loftus triple just before the buzzer, to pull even at 53-53.

Dixie State took three different two-point leads in the fourth quarter, but never managed to extend the advantage. Meanwhile, Westminster wrestled back a five-point lead at 72-67 with 40 seconds remaining. Stevenson trimmed the lead back to 72-69 with a jumper in the paint. DSU then forced a five-second violation to earn a final chance to send the game to overtime. After calling a timeout, the Trailblazers saw three separate 3-point attempts clang off the back iron as time expired, and the Griffins escaped with the victory.

Dixie State shot 47 percent (29-of-61) from the field, 33 percent (6-of-18) from 3-point range, and 100 percent (5-of-5) from the free throw line. Pavlica led four DSU players in double figures with 16 points, nine rebounds, and six assists, while Loftus and Franks each finished with 13 points. Stevens added 11 points and four rebounds.

The Trailblazers now enter the 2020 RMAC Tournament as the No. 7 seed and will travel to No. 2 seed Western Colorado on Tuesday for its quarterfinal matchup in Gunnison, Colorado. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
