Trailblazers edge Regis in overtime Friday, 63-56

The Dixie State women's basketball team needed overtime, but edged Regis on Friday for a 63-56 victory inside the Regis Fieldhouse in Denver, Colorado.

The Trailblazers (17-9, 12-8 RMAC) and Rangers (11-15, 9-11 RMAC) went back and forth throughout the game in a contest that saw six ties and four lead changes.

Regis jumped to an early 16-10 lead after the first quarter despite shooting a lower percentage from the field than Dixie State. The Rangers made up the difference with three 3-pointers in the frame.

Dixie State used a 9-2 run over the final five minutes of the second quarter to pull even with Regis at 22-22 at halftime. Breaunna Gillen sparked the run with a jumper, while Ali Franks added five points, including a 3-pointer.

The second half saw the script flipped, as the Trailblazers played to an 18-14 advantage during the third quarter to build a 40-36 lead heading to the final frame. Chesney Stevens led the charge with seven points and three rebounds during the period, while Franks buried another triple just before the end of the quarter.

Dixie State looked to run away with the game in the fourth quarter, building a 49-38 lead at the 6:05 mark. But like the Trailblazers in the second quarter, the Rangers responded to tie the game. Regis closed the frame on an 11-0 run to pull even and force overtime.

Keslee Stevenson set the tone for the Trailblazers in the extra session, draining a 3-pointer on DSU's first possession. Regis countered with a jumper on the other end, but Madi Loftus added a triple to push the lead back to 55-51. The Rangers would cut the lead to one point later in the frame at 57-56, but Dixie State closed the game on a 6-0 run to seal the 63-56 win.

Dixie State shot 36 percent (22-of-60) from the field, 26 percent (7-of-26) from 3-point range, and 66 percent (12-of-18) from the free throw line. Franks led three DSU players in double figures with 16 points, while Stevens added a double-double, tying a career-high with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Loftus filled up the stat sheet, finishing with 15 points, eight rebounds, a career-high six assists, and four steals.

The Trailblazers will close its Denver-area trip on Saturday with a 5 p.m. battle against Colorado Christian in Lakewood, Colorado.
