Trailblazers split on Day Two at Cactus Classic

The Dixie State softball team played to a split of its two games at the Cactus Classic on Saturday in Tucson, Arizona.
 
The Trailblazers (11-2) rallied for a 3-1 win over Southern Nazarene in the day's opener, then dropped an 8-2 decision to St. Mary's in the final game of the day.
 
GAME ONE – Dixie State 3, Southern Nazarene 1
 
Dixie State and Southern Nazarene played through a defensive struggle in DSU's first game of the day on Saturday. After two scoreless innings, the Crimson Storm took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. The lead would hold until the seventh inning, and the Trailblazers were down to their final three outs.
 
The Trailblazers rallied in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs on three hits and two SNU errors to build a 3-1 lead. Laura Lockard belted a 2-RBI double during the inning, while Kori Gahn recorded a sacrifice fly to account for the third run.
 
After a leadoff walk in the bottom of the seventh, the DSU defense forced a fly out to left field, then turned a double play to seal the victory.
 
Lockard, Hannah Hughbanks, and Brylee Rudd accounted for the three Dixie State hits in the win. Carissa Burgess tossed a one-hit gem with four strikeouts to improve to 5-0 on the season.
 
GAME TWO – St. Mary's 8, Dixie State 2
 
Dixie State struck first in the bottom of the second when Rudd doubled to left center field to score Kasey Crawford from second and build a 1-0 lead.
 
But the lead didn't last long, as St. Mary's took a 4-1 lead with a two-out grand slam in the top of the third. The Rattlers would tack on one run in the sixth inning and three more in the seventh to extend the lead to 8-1.
 
The Trailblazers pulled one run back in the bottom of the seventh when Meagan Anders singled to allow Crawford to score her second run of the game, but DSU wouldn't get any closer.
 
Dixie State finished with six hits in the game by six different players. Cambrie Hazel (4-2) recorded four strikeouts in the loss.
 
The Trailblazers will wrap up their time at the Cactus Classic on Sunday with a 10 a.m. matchup vs. Western Oregon.
