Trailblazers close Cactus Classic with 4-3 win over Western Oregon

The Dixie State softball team wrapped up the Cactus Classic with a 4-3 victory over Western Oregon on Sunday at Lincoln Park in Tucson, Arizona.

With the win, the Trailblazers improved their record at the tournament to 4-1, and closed the non-conference portion of their schedule with a 12-2 record.

Dixie State broke up a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth, scoring two runs on three hits and one WOU error. Brylee Rudd started things off with a double to left field, then scored when Destiny Diaz belted a pinch-hit, RBI-single to center field. Kirsten Quigley re-entered after the pinch hit by Diaz, and later scored after a Hannah Hughbanks single to right field and subsequent error by the WOU right fielder to build a 2-0 lead.

The Trailblazers tacked on one run in the sixth inning on a Laura Lockard RBI-single, followed by a solo home run by Hughbanks in the top of the seventh to extend the lead to 4-0.

Dixie State seemed poised to wrap up a shutout victory with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but a dropped fly ball allowed two runs to score. The Wolves added another run with an RBI-single to right field on the next play to cut the lead to 4-3. However, DSU extinguished the WOU rally on the ensuing play with a groundout to clinch the win.

Nine different Trailblazers recorded a hit in the victory, led by Hughbanks with two hits and her second home run of the year.

Ashtyn Bauerle earned the win to improve to 2-0 in the pitcher's circle, recording four strikeouts in 5.0 scoreless innings. Carissa Burgess entered in the sixth inning and posted her first save of the season.

The Trailblazers return to Karl Brooks Field next week to open Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. DSU will host CSU-Pueblo in a four-game series on Saturday and Sunday.
