Trailblazers sweep on Day One at Cactus Classic

Dixie State softball opened play at the Cactus Classic in thrilling fashion on Friday, posting two comeback victories at Lincoln Park in Tucson, Arizona.

The Trailblazers (10-1) scored four runs in the top of the seventh to rally for a 5-2 win over No. 2 Texas A&M-Kingsville, before overcoming a 5-1 deficit to claim an 8-5 victory over West Texas A&M.

GAME ONE – Dixie State 5, Texas A&M-Kingsville 2

Dixie State threatened to take an early lead, placing at least two runners on base in three of its first four innings. However, the Trailblazers could not bring the runners home, stranding eight base runners over the same stretch.

Texas A&M-Kingsville broke a scoreless draw with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 2-0 lead.

The Trailblazers looked to answer in the top of the fifth, cutting the lead to 2-1 with the bases still loaded and just one out. But the next two DSU batters were retired, stranding three more runners.

Dixie State rallied in the top of the seventh, scoring four runs on four hits and one TAMUK error. Laura Lockard sparked the rally with a leadoff single to right field. Maile Maletta entered as a pinch runner for Lockard, then scored when Brylee Rudd singled to left field. Three batters later, Brenna Cornwall belted a 2-RBI single to left field. After reaching on a walk, Hannah Hughbanks scored the final run on an error to push the score to the final tally of 5-2.

Dixie State slugged 12 hits in the game, led by Hughbanks with three hits and Cornwall, Lockard, and Kasey Crawford with two hits each.

Carissa Burgess tossed a complete-game gem to improve to 5-0, allowing just three hits with six strikeouts.

GAME TWO – Dixie State 8, West Texas A&M 5

The Trailblazers quickly built a 1-0 lead when Lockard drove an RBI-single up the middle in the bottom of the first.

The lead would hold until the fifth inning, when West Texas A&M used a pair of singles to tie the game at 1-1. The DSU defense clamped down and seemed poised to escape the inning without further damage, but a wild pitch on a third strike allowed a WTAMU batter to reach base. The Buffs took advantage of their second chance, scoring four more runs to build a 5-1 lead.

Unfazed, Dixie State countered with six runs on six hits to retake a 7-5 lead in the bottom of the fifth. Kirsten Quigley plated the first run with an RBI-double down the right field line, then scored after a Hughbanks sacrifice fly and an RBI-single by Cornwall. Lockard also picked up an RBI during the frame, followed by a two-run home run by Shea Clements.

Dixie State tacked on an insurance run in the sixth inning when Kori Gahn belted an RBI-double down the right field line to push the score to the final mark of 8-5.

The Trailblazers finished with 10 total hits, led by Cornwall and Gahn with two hits each.

Cambrie Hazel (4-1) earned the win after entering the game in the fifth inning. Hazel allowed one hit with three strikeouts in 2.1 innings pitched. Ashtyn Bauerle recorded four strikeouts over 4.2 innings pitched.

Dixie State will continue play at the Cactus Classic on Saturday, taking on Southern Nazarene at 10 a.m. and St. Mary's at 12:30 p.m.
