Trailblazers sweep Northwest Nazarene on Stand Up to Cancer day

The Dixie State softball team posted a doubleheader sweep over Northwest Nazarene on Monday, kicking off the week with a pair of victories at Karl Brooks Field.

On a day where competition and the will to win still ruled the day, players, coaches, and fans from both teams were united in a specific cause before, during, and after the games. The cause? Stand Up To Cancer.

The Trailblazers and Nighthawks, in collaboration with the Stand Up To Cancer organization, honored all who have been affected by cancer throughout the day with pink jerseys, ceremonial first pitches before both games by cancer survivors, and a special moment during the first game that allowed all in attendance to recognize and remember friends and loved ones who have been affected by the disease.

After the pregame ceremonies, Dixie State (8-1) earned a 9-0 win in five innings in Game One, before posting a 5-1 victory in Game Two to push its winning streak to eight games.

GAME ONE – Dixie State 9, Northwest Nazarene 0

After a scoreless first inning, the Trailblazers broke through with three runs on three hits and a pair of NNU errors in the second. Shea Clements, Laura Lockard, and Kaylan Walker led off the inning with three consecutive singles. Each would go on to score to build a 3-0 lead.

Dixie State erupted for five runs on four hits and one NNU error in the third inning. Lockard, Walker, and Destiny Diaz each recorded an RBI in the frame, while Meagan Anders highlighted the inning with a pinch-hit, 2-RBI single to center field to extend the lead to 8-0.

The Trailblazers added a final run in the fourth inning when Clements singled up the middle to bring the score to the final tally of 9-0.

Carissa Burgess tossed a two-hit gem to claim her fourth win of the season. Burgess allowed just two hits with three strikeouts in the shutout victory.

Dixie State recorded 10 total hits, led by a 3-for-3 performance by Clements, and two hits each from Brenna Cornwall, Lockard, and Walker.

GAME TWO – Dixie State 5, Northwest Nazarene 1

Like the first game, the teams played through a scoreless first inning in game two. The second inning seemed to be heading down the same path, but the floodgates opened for DSU with two outs.

After back-to-back groundouts to open the inning, Mikaela Thomson ripped a double down the left field line, then scored on the next play on an NNU throwing error. Following a second NNU error, Cornwall belted a 2-RBI single up the middle. Two batters later, Kori Gahn pulled a 2-RBI double down the right field line to cap the inning and build a 5-0 lead.

Northwest Nazarene scored its lone run of the day in the sixth inning when an errant DSU throw made its way past third base and into left field to push the score to the final tally of 5-1.

Cambrie Hazel (3-1) earned the win in the pitcher's circle, allowing just three hits with a season-high 14 strikeouts in the complete-game gem.

Cornwall and Thomson led DSU at the plate with two hits each.

The Trailblazers head to Tucson, Arizona, later this week to play their first games away from St. George at the Cactus Classic.
