Dixie State clinched its first series win of the new season on the strength of a 5-2 victory at Cal State San Marcos on Saturday afternoon at the CSUSM Baseball Field.
After the two sides traded single runs in the opening frame, the Trailblazers (2-0) plated two runs in the second and another in the third to vault to a 4-1 lead.
Tyson Fisher broke the tie with the Blazers' first home run of the season to lead off the second, as the sophomore ambushed the first pitch he saw from CSUSM starter Dylan Wannamaker (L, 0-1) and sent it over the left field wall.
Tanner Harper followed with a one-out single and after an
Alec Flemetakis sacrifice,
Lane Pritchard brought home Harper carrying the second run of the stanza with a single to left. Dixie State used the long ball to pad its lead in the third when
Cade Spurlin homered off Wannamaker to lead off that inning.
The Cougars (0-2) got one of those runs back in the fourth after a two-out Blazer error extended the inning, which allowed CSUSM to make it a 4-2 game following an Emilio Luna RBI-hit. However DSU answered in the fifth when Fisher singled home
Jake Engel, who doubled to lead off the inning.
The run support was more than enough for junior lefthander
Jack Gonzales (W, 1-0), who struck out four and scattered four hits and two runs (one earned) over 5.0 innings of work. Gonzales then gave way to the Blazer bullpen, which limited the Cougars to just two hits over the final four innings to close out the win.
Preston Hannay retired the first seven Cougars he faced before CSUSM stringed together consecutive singles with one out in the eighth. Hannay caught Joseph Bahna looking at strike three for the second out, and
Colton Harris came on to strike out Luc Stuka to end the threat.
Brayden Bonner (S, 1) then retired San Marcos in order in the ninth to earn his first save of the year and the ninth save of his career (T-6
th all-time at DSU).
DSU outhit San Marcos 9-6, with Fisher leading the way three more safeties to give him seven hits in eight at-bats through the two games of the series, while Pritchard went 2-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored.
Dixie State will go for the series sweep in Sunday's finale, which begins at 11 a.m. (PT).
