Trailblazers outlast Colorado School of Mines Saturday, 77-72

Ali Franks pours in a career-high 27 points; London Pavlica narrowly misses a triple-double

Dixie State women's basketball bounced back with a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win on Saturday, outlasting Colorado School of Mines for a 77-72 victory inside the Burns Arena.

The Trailblazers (9-4, 4-3 RMAC) quickly put the memory of a slow start on Friday in the rearview mirror, racing to a 12-2 lead over the first three minutes of the first quarter. Ali Franks sparked the run, connecting on two 3-pointers, while London Pavlica assisted on both triples and scored six points of her own. The teams traded baskets over the final seven minutes of the frame, and DSU took a 23-13 lead into the second quarter.

Dixie State took its largest lead of the game in the second quarter when Deshka Olson buried a triple to push the advantage to 34-21 at the 6:08 mark of the frame. The Orediggers responded, closing the half on a 12-4 run to trim the lead to 38-35 at the break.

Mines continued the run into the third quarter, converting a layup on the first possession of the second half to pull to within 38-37. The Trailblazers answered with five consecutive points, including a Chesney Stevens layup on a dish from Pavlica, and a Pavlica triple to push the lead back to 43-39. From there, the teams traded baskets, including two 3-pointers from Olson for DSU, and headed to the final frame in a 52-52 tie.

Colorado School of Mines seemed to take control of the game early in the fourth quarter, and opened the frame on a 10-3 run to build a 62-55 with eight minutes remaining. But DSU refused to go away, and countered with an 11-2 run over the next four minutes to retake a 66-64 lead. Ali Franks keyed the run, scoring seven of the 11 DSU points during the stretch.

The Orediggers wrestled back a 67-66 lead two minutes later, but Madi Loftus drained a 3-pointer on the next DSU possession to reclaim a 69-67 advantage. Franks added a jumper to add to the lead, and the Trailblazers held off a final CSM push to clinch the 77-72 victory.

Dixie State shot a season-high 51 percent (24-of-47) from the field, including 52 percent (11-of-21) from 3-point range, while converting on 62 percent (18-of-29) from the free throw line.

Franks led the charge with a career-high 27 points on 10-of-14 shooting, while Pavlica narrowly missed the second triple-double in DSU women's basketball history. Pavlica finished with 13 points, a career-high 11 assists, and nine rebounds. Olson added 14 points on 4-of-7 shooting from downtown, while Loftus chipped in 10 points, five rebounds, and two assists.

The Trailblazers will head back on the road next week, stopping at MSU Denver on Friday, before trekking to Chadron State in Chadron, Nebraska, on Saturday.
